That looks great, Nandi! Sweet job! Can't wait to see some of the other Crawler sprites you've designed interact with ol' Kurt.

One suggestion: Try upping the font size a bit. Makes reading easier. :)

actually, yeah, a good font can make all the difference. go to http://www.blambot.com that's where i got the font that i use for the caption contest, it is a professional comic book font :D I use Digital Strip, mainly but Zud Juice and Kid Kosmic are really nice too, i think.

ok, here's one with 'Digital Strip': http://nightscrawlers.com/forum/image.php?iid=642
good for casual dialogue, and ti takes to bold and italics quite nicely

here's one with 'Kid Kosmic' in bold and 'Oh Crap' at the bottom, and a severely warped 'Digital Strip' for the green dude's dialogue

http://nightscrawlers.com/forum/image.php?iid=644

good for action stuff, i think... quite bold on its own. italic barely shows up for some reason...

(if the captions don't show up, or the second one looks kinda 'meh' (i re-did the fonts to try out Kid Kosmic today and liked it better) you have the old image cached, hit refresh)

Problem is with word ballon thingies I used...their from Microsoft Word and if i make the font any bigger they won't fit in the panel...

I'll check out Bamfette's link...see what I find there...and yes...a folder would be great Jill...:)

More are coming...just need time to get 'em done...darn work...but it will pay for my Xbox :D

I use Photoshop, and use the Marquee(?) tool to mark out rectangular bubbles and then I fill 'em with white.

Then I use a style effect on the bubbles layer that gives them the one-pixel outline.

Much quicker, and can be edited if you need more space ^_^

Marquee, eh? I've been cutting and pasting the boxes onto the finished panel, though your way sounds easier. *ponders*

Damn me for being a Photoshop newbie...

Do what I do for a dimensional portal.

Select your shape tool and pick the oval.
Now go to the little 'style' box above and pick the weird-lookin' rainbow-y thing.
Make your portal.

Voila!

To see how effective it looks, check out this:
http://cat.devil.com/images/Comics/Strip/XMEC65.png

Looks quite nifty if I do say so myself.

what effect is that, Nutter? stroke?

anyway here is how i do mine for the aid of Nandi, Ryan and anyone else who wants to do speech or thougt baloons...

first of all, keep in mind all this should be done on a seperate layer!!!

first, my secret to perfect curved tails:

make an eliptical selection where one side is the right shape for the tail you have in mind:

Image

with the 'alt' key held down, and with the eliptical marquee tool again, take a chunk out of that selection, leaving you with a tail:

Image

eliptical marquee again, make a selection around the (imaginary in this case) text:

Image

fill with white and deselect:

Image

after you get all your thought baloons done, double cick on the layer to get the 'layer style' control panel up. select 'stroke' from the very bottom, change the colour to black, set it to one pixel wide, and voila!:

Image

it appears more dificult than it really is, honest. :) the trickiest part is getting those tails just right, and if you don't want to bother just use the straight edge free form marquee tool to make your tails.

Yeah...I tried fiddling around in my art programs last night...but I just got totally frustrated and went back to my old way...using the callouts in Microsoft Word...they're not perfect, but they get the job done...

Speaking of getting the job done...I just uploaded 5 episodes of All My Crawlers (including the one above) to the gallery... http://nightscrawlers.com/forum/category.php?cid=49 ...enjoy...
