My son got to meet one of his personal heroes today. At a gathering to honor our recently returned veterans, an elderly gentleman showed up briefly to help welcome them home. The words on his VFW hat revealed the conflict and the theater in which he'd fought. WW2. Iwo Jima. My son shook his hand and said he wanted to be a Marine when he grows up. This got him a pat on the back and an "Oorah."

I'm only kicking myself that I didn't get a picture.

I met Claudio Sanchez.

Also, I got my girlfriend some jewelry and she loved it. A little Owl ring (on the band it says "OWL <3 FOREVER") and a necklace that looks like a russian nesting doll in shape and design, but the appearance is of a japanese geisha. She loves that crap. :3

I dun good. I got lotso kisses.

First Debate tournament, and my partner and I won 3 out of 4, with 126 speaker points! We place sixth out of about 70 teams! And I don't feel too bad about losing that one, because the team we were up aainst were seniors, and we are only freshmen, and it was really close. Next tournament, we are gonna kill it! :D

My mom got us a new mattress! Is niiice and cushy and my aching back thanks her.

Since she sprang for that, we bought all new pillows, waterproof (read as babyproof) mattress pad, and some new soft, soft sheets.

I watched "Cheers" today for the first time.

I had seen various episodes, no more than 15 minutes of each, never thought much of it. Decided that even though it was the origin of one of my favorite characters of all time (Frasier Crane), and I really loved the show Kelsey was in later, I figured "Cheers" had...
I don't know, I just assumed it was a dated show.

Boy was I wrong.
This show is easily just as smart, if not smarter than "Frasier".

I love it. It's heart warming, it's tactful, it's funny, it hits a lot of great social points... and I love it.

Thank you Instant View Netflix.

Son: Trick or treat!

Neighbor holding huge bowl of candy: Here you go... oh, wait. I don't think you can have any of this candy with your braces. Let me see if I can find something you can have.

Son: It's okay. We're sending whatever I can't eat to Afghanistan.

Neighbor: Well, open up your bag then.

And she proceeded to dump the entire bowl of candy in.

One, I finally got my back-up laptop working, as my other one's battery died, and I haven't been able to do anything since than. It's not really a GOOD back-up laptop, but it's something. That I found in my basement. :P

Two, Yesterday, my partner and I got 1st place in the public forum debate tournament at our rival's school! We got to walk out with their HUGE trophy and rub it in their faces. It was great fun. I also won 2nd place speaker, which means that I was the second best speaker in public forum! Our whole team went to BaskinRobins afterwards in full suits and dresses, and it was hilarious watching the people stare at us. We weren't a little bit overdressed, were we? :D

Congrats man! What a great win!

:) Very glad to hear about your successful debate! Is there video of it somewhere? Anyone throw it on Youtube?

And good to see you got a back-up lappy. Hope to see you in chat soon! ;)

Once again, congratulations and good work!

Working at the IMX races yesterday could have been an abject disaster, with the snow, the wind, and the track being an icy mass of frozen ruts, and yet... the racing was spectacular, and I only had to sling one messed up arm.

In honor of Veterans' Day, my daughter and many of her classmates were assigned to interview some of the area's few remaining WW2 veterans. My daughter got to meet some very remarkable people- including a few Nisei soldiers of the 442nd Infantry Regiment.

Kind of weird mixed news. Our county just celebrated its centennial. So did a local confectioner shop/ice cream factory. Because I'd voted in a poll on historic landmark preservation, my name was put in to a drawing, and I won a prize donated by the ice cream factory. Ice cream. Five whole gallons. Not only do I not eat much ice cream to begin with, but I don't even have roon for all that in my freezer.

The good news is the fire department does!

Went to the Providence Journal Offices today, got a tour of the entire Newspaper production, got to sit in an official editors meeting & see how they design the front page, and got to speak with noted columnist (and friend to our Student Paper The Unfiltered Lens), Edward Fitzpatrick. In the end we got a copy of the first issue of the paper, from back in April 21st, 1829 (signed by Karen Bordeleau, Deputy/Assistant Executive Editor).
