1/5 Announcement: Major Chat Changes!
Posted: Sat Jan 05, 2008 11:51 am
On February 1, 2008, a number of major changes will be made to the Shadowed Corner IRC Network's architecture, many of which will affect Nightscrawlers Chat users. The most pertinent are:
1.) The concept of a server lobby will be deprecated. When clients connect to the Nightscrawlers Chat server, they will therefore no longer be automatically forced to join the #nightscrawlers channel. If users do wish to automatically join #nightscrawlers, they must configure their client to do so. HOWTOs for all major clients are forthcoming.
2.) Server passwords may be used to identify to NickServ. When setting up a connection to an IRC server, most clients will allow specification of a server password for private servers. All servers on the Shadowed Corner IRC Network are public; therefore, we are deviating from this standard in the interests of usability. If a server password is specified upon connection, it will be used to identify to NickServ immediately. This saves users the trouble of creating a script or setting up a client event to automatically or manually identify themselves. We anticipate our users finding this behavior very convenient.
3.) All servers' software will be changed to a new "bleeding edge" branch of the codebase. This branch is where all the development of the software is, and we are assisting development by beta-testing the branch. Documentation of what exactly this will mean in terms of server functionality is forthcoming, but it is anticipated that this change will be transparent to users and be nothing but beneficial.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to post them in this thread.
