RESPECT
on the subject of [b[respect[/b] and politeness. Is it really too much to ask that people be polite and respect others opinions/work? Here and at other messageboards things are getting downright nasty. People are spewing venomous, hurtful comments like it's OKAY. And while it may be tolerated at some places, here it's NOT!
I wish for people to read this post at X-Fan by Darick Robertson:
Put up or Shut up
and to see a result of rudeness, see THIS POST by Chuck Austen. he LEFT his forum at X-Fan because of constant, incessant attacks on his character.
~*EDIT*~ also wish to direct your attention to THIS INTERVIEW also with Chuck. look at that, one of the kindest, nicest people i have ever met, driven off the net entirely by this boorish behaviour. And not only that, he had to change his email adress, his ISP, he has police investigating DEATH THREATS, and he is no longer going to his comic shop! people, you are ruining peoples LIVES, here.
Maybe THAT will get it through peoples skulls what hurtful bastards they can be at times. These are people with feelings you are talking about, not some emotionless machine cranking out books. I know some people think Chuck in particular is over-reacting. But I talk to him all the time, and I don't think he is at all. He is no 'coward' he CAN take critisism very well. I have critisized his work myself, and he takes it in stride. But what he has to put up with if he goes on the net, or even if he doesn't now that people are sending these kinds of remarks to his home, (hence the changing of email adresses) or saying them to his face, goes well beyond critique and into hateful and mean comments. some are downright disgusting, like accusing him of being a pedophile. That is SO wrong. And even if they are just thoughtlessness, they still hurt, they can still get him (or anyone else) mad. Yes, he is in a creative field, and should and CAN deal with critisism, but this kind of behaviour calls for more than a thick skin, it calls for him to be emotionless. He is a human being, just like you. Emotiolessness is too much to ask.
Seriously this is a VERY big thing with me. if you bash a creator, and by that I mean saying he/she sucks/is a hack/my 3 year old kid can draw or write better, as opposed to offering up a constructive critique as to WHY you feel that way, (and "this issue sucks because died1!!" does not qualify. that is a fanboy rant.) I will be VERY displeased, and be prepared to recieve what you dish out right back. The second you bash someone, you lose all rights to be treated in a polite manner as far as I am concerned. These people work very hard at what they do. No one ever tries to make a bad comic/movie/etc. They are doing the best job they know how. If the finished product is not to your tastes, fine. No one can please everyone all the time. But do not belittle the work, care and effort that went into creating something by flaming it or the creators involved with a flippant mean-spirited remark or rant. There is a big difference between being critical, and bing hateful. We tolerate critical just fine, hateful, you WILL be punished.
Also, 'soandso sucks because they have this opinion which differs from mine' is also not acceptable. State that the person involved has this opinion and state that you disagree with it, that's fine. But differing opinions is no call for bashing.
Keep in mind that Dave isn't the ONLY creator to be reading these forums. Chuck comes here, others you would never guess at come here. editors, artists, writers, colourists, you name it. This is a PUBLIC forum. It is closed to NO ONE, including any creator who may wish to drop by. Post only what you would want the person you are talking about to hear if you said it to thier face, becasue you just never know.
The same goes for peoples opinons here at the forum. We are a forum of around 1000 members. As such, opinions will vary greatly from one person to another. I am not saying we all have to agree, but we should be able to agree to disagree, and debate the subject at hand with politeness and respect. Belitiling someone's beliefs/opinions will be treated very harshly by moderators and administrators here. Depending on the level of the offense, and if it is a chronic problem, it could result in banning from the forums entirely.
quite simply, play nice, be polite, and treat everyone and thier opinion/work with respect.
