I've for a while had an issue with vegan/vegetarian people raising their children that way, but then it's not really my business at all. But it's so obviously unhealthy for young children, and I have no idea why they wouldn't choose to at least breastfeed their child. I mean, doesnt that make sense?

So sad. They thought they were doing the right thing too :(

Did they?

Because most vegans I know are very strongly in favor of breastfeeding. "Cow's milk for calves, human milk for babies," and such.

Add to that the sheer amount of education freely available through La Leche League, local health and human services, et cetera on how even vegans can breastfeed without violating their convictions.

That's why I eat meat... and drink breast milk regularly...

My cousins are vegan, but for dietary reasons only. ;)

I once read that people who were breastfed as babies are better at dealing with stress than those who were bottle-fed, but I don't know how credible the article was.

But I do find this story rather hard to believe. It says the baby weighed only 3.5 lbs. When I was born, I weighed 7 lbs 11 oz. If six weeks later I weighed half that, you would think my parents would realize something was wrong. So while I'm certain these parents did not set out to starve their child, I can't believe they didn't notice the signs of malnurishment beforehand. It's very sad, though, and it almost feels wrong to punish the parents so severely... would non-intentionally starving your child count as murder or manslaughter? If the parents really were just that ignorant of children's needs, doesn't it seem a little ridiculous to add them in with all the serial killers, etc, when we already have overflow in many prisons? Then again, you can't just bend the rules for every Sally-Sob-story that comes along. ~sigh~

"Soy milk and apple juice"

WHAT?

I thought its common sense that you feed baby with real milk.

With real milk I of course mean the one that comes from a human female.
