Avatar size?

I went to edit my sig because it had the funny apostrophe problem in it, and the code for the smilies had changed. No problems there.
Anyway, once I had clicked on the edit button and it had made the sig changes, my Control Panel told me that my avatar was too big, and was being deleted. Okay, so I made a smaller version, one that was smaller than other people's avatars. It gave me the same message again (and when I checked my recent post, my avatar was indeed missing). So I made an even smaller avatar, one that was 38x50, and it STILL said it was too big, and deleted it. Has something changed here, or is this just a glitch?
