Sex scenes in fanfics.....

This is probably not the right thing to put here because it is neither a fic or a piece of art, but I think that I wanted to say it any way.

While there has been a couple of fics that I have read where sex was well written, for the most part, writers seem to confuse porn and smut with love making. You will have this piece of fiction that is well written, suddenly segue into the most nasty, filthy dialogue! It always ruins it for me. I you are writting a piece of pure smut, then label it as such!

I have read some stories that had Kurt saying some of the most nasty, out of character things. please dont think that I am a total uptight prude, 'cause Im notbut hearing the Fuzzy one talk like he is in a porn movie just doesnt do it for me:eek:

I have several fanfics that I am working on that I want to write a sex scene in but I want to make it tasteful and above all, in character. I think that if it is done right, it could be really sweet or steamy, as long as you didn't get too much into writing smutty dialogue. I want things to be romantic and even erotic but not nasty Ok Ill admit, I want to write a pseudo-naughty fic about Emma and Bobby...but it's all spankings and silliness:naughty:But it's EMMA! and besides Bobby brings out a softer side of her.

What do you all think ? Can you write sex and not make it ugly?:ooh:

nah this topic is cool here.. i think more concrete rules need ot be created for this section :p it's kinda different than the rest of the forum

anyway! i think it can be done. i gerneraly feel the same way you do. sometimes i am reading away happily then it just turns into the most smutty thing ever for a page or so, then back to normal... it's very disconcerting and i usually skim those parts if it is a part of a larger story. BUT there are a few stories i have read that did a sex scene and handled it well. there is one story that is nothing but a sex scene, but it is handled so in character and tastefully that it was a really fun read

: actually that one was so great because really it was a whole lotta foreplay and sex games... anywho! as long as it is handled in character and you don't focus too much on the mechanics (like, keep the words 'thrusting' and 'shaft' to a minimum...) it can be a very fun read... it's as you say when it turns into porn when it's a turn-off rather than a turn-on.

As with many things...less is more. Some writers and artists, too, do not realize this. A kiss is far more potent if the artist shows the lips bearly touching and leaves the action up to the reader to finish. Some will finish it in their mind as the softest of kisses, lightly brushing and nibbling...others will have the characters swapping tonsils. This works even more truely when other sexual encounters are depicted. One of the most erotic scenes in comics was between Nick Fury and The Countessa. Back in the seventies...Sterenko did it. And all he did was show a telephone off the hook. You knew what was happening...you dreamed about it...but it was never shown...it even got past the old ladies at the CODE!!! but the eroticism was in the minds of the readers...light and romantic or hot and steamy...the reader filled in the blanks...and in doing it this way, the artist and writer drew the reader into the action as well...making them finish it in their own minds...and this is good storytelling!

Yeah...that's the way I write 'em...leave it up to the readers' imagination. Not exactly a 'did they or didn't they' thing...it's pretty obvious what they're up to...just a nice, tasteful, cut away to something else...

I've written ONE so-called lemon in my entire fanfic career (not a Nighty one), and I didn't make reference to body parts or use the usual terminology at all, and neither of the two involved spoke a word...

Ahem... I read that Ice cubes fic with Kurt and Amanda; very well written and tastefully done. Imaginative as well.

I remember seeing the issue with Nick and the Countessa at a friend's house in '81 I think. I think it was one of the hottest scenes I had encountered in comics... it was impressive. I also remember a time when Amanda had returned from a flight to find Kurt sprawled on her couch in uniform but with the bamf-doll covering where his naughty bits were. He said something cute about her keeping warm with the bamf-doll but the real thing was better (or some such) and she replied "Yum!" Nothing shown but you knew what came next....

The problem I have with most fan-fic sex scenes (slash or not) is basically the same as those so far mentioned... They are based on the premise that two people left alone for five minutes will have sex... It makes for a jarring break in whatever tale is being told.

yes it was the icecubes fic... a very very naughty fic, i just went looking for it again and it was a bit more graphic than i remember actualy,(i mostly remembered the icecubes) but still very tastefully done compared to most, and i can't deny i enjoyed it

and yes, less is more! there are many times where the writer sets it up so you KNOW what went on even if it is not shown... and it is much more sexy that way most of the time. and not even with just sex scenes, there is that famous scene in Resevoir Dogs, you know the one, with the ear... people imaginations did far more than they could have ever shown.

: I know exactly what you mean. As an 18th Century English Lit professor of mine once said, there's only so many ways to describe the sex act...

Even if you're writing plain erotica, you have to have some amount of characterization, some motivation, some interest, or else it's just repetition of the same old descriptions, over and over and over...

I just want to say I can most definitely write a truly romantic and tasteful sex scene. In fact I'll be writing one pretty soon here (hopefully..)!:) I am quite capable of writing nasty, but I don't know when it comes to Kurt, and anyway I prefer not to.

Okay, I gotta throw in my two cents....

I think it depends on the writter. If they want to write smut, they will. If they want to write an actual love scean (sp?), they will, and I think writting that instead of the smut, is harder.

Why? Because you have to sit and think. Yes, it is sex, but if you want it tastefull and beautiful, you have to think about what it is you want. Otherwise, it just becomes porn.

I've written one Nighty related fic that was nothing but sex (made Slrti's comp explode, and I'm working on the sequel, but it has a plot), and after I was done writting it, I was tried. Does that happen to anyone else?

Sometimes after I write a fic I am emotionally drained and sometimes Im hyper...I don't know why I'm hung up on a Kurt and Kitty love match, it just always seemed like they were going to go there eventually...even now, if you look at what the highest rated comic coming out next week is, the Unlimited with Kurt and Kitty is WAAAY up on the chart...they just click together.....Thats why I write so many of my fics about them, besides, they are cute!

I have been trying to logic out who Chuck is going to pair Kurt up with in the pages of Uncanny and I have been thinking about writing a Nighty/Husk tale, because she is supposed show up not under the best circumstances and make the team really unhappy with her, but can you REALLY see Kurt staying mad at a pretty blonde girl? sounds like a damsel in distress to me.....I know that Chuck has made noises about Amanda too, and I'm wondering if he is bringing her back....even tho' I think it is weird for foster sibs to have a relationship, Amanda can be really cool and they had some really hot times *pant*...I think that sexy scenes can be written well but usually aren't.

I too, for the most part, find graphic sex in fic a huge turn-off. So, I've always shied away from writing sex scenes in my fic. The closest I've come is a suggestive scene in Shadow Man that quickly veers into the next morning. It's just a personal preference that I don't write smut. I'd prolly be blushing while I wrote it and would feel guilty the nexy day.

I've read a few fics by a woman called Minisinoo, who does, IMHO, a pretty darn good job of making graphic sex readable and enjoyable. But, she even gets carried away sometimes!

So I pretty well agree with everyone, sex is best when left to the imagination.

The gist of it was that sex should never be gratuitous... It should enhance the storyline...it should give us a better understanding of the characters...it should be, perhaps, a pivotal scene for launching a new storyarc or resolving a former one. But it should never be sex for sex's sake. I know, I know... people have gratuitous sex all the time. But the writer controls what happens in the story...just as the artist should control artistic elements like sight lines and tangents. the writer can show us aaspects of a character for good or ill that we never would have suspected...or can enrich our understanding of a well known and beloved hacracter. ...and the character's relationship to someone else.
If we see Nightcrawler, for instance, as swashbuckling and romantic, we want to see him be this way in his intimate scenes, too. It is jarring to the sensibilities to thinkof him as...say... into whips, chains and leather...or as an out of control serialrapist....or even a rough and nasty lover. It doesn't fit what we know of him from canon. When fanfic writers digress into their own private fantasies we sometimes get some pretty out of character scenes. and these are jarring to our sensibilities...UNLESS the writer has given us a reason for the particular scene...a damn good reason. A plausible reason.
In writing, you can make any character do anything you want him or her todo. but for your readers to believe your story, you must either stay in character or give plausible reason for your character to act in the method you are describing in your story. And when you add in sex...which is central to the makeup of humans...you get a real tough combo.
It's not easy writing sex scenes...an inexperienced writer should try a lot of other scenes, action as well as character building, before getting into this genre.

Excellent point! Particularly what you said about how it should enhance the storyline. The sex scene in my story (when I finally finish it) is actually a key point in the advancement of the plot line and character developement. So it's definitely not there just for the sake of it.
As well (if I may say so) it's tastefully done and certainly doesn't mess (so to speak) with the personalities of the characters involved.
