Hey guys after reading...20 Dean Koontz books, 40 goosebumps, watching numerous horror flicks and reading a good few Stephen King, i think i've decided that i might be a good Horror Novelist. . So i want you to tell me the top 10 things that scare you. They might happen to be right in your life, fictional beings/phenomena, places that scare you, nightmares you've had which have scared you, or Animals which scare you. Just make sure its from from 1# fear to the thing that scares you least.

Being a novelist means you got to write something that comes from you, not necessarily others. It can be INSPIRED by other people but it has to come from you. Also a horror novelist is a very special kind. You have to really, really, really know when to write vague and descriptive all at the same time. Pick and choose what you want your reader to feel and notice, because unlike drama and comedy, suspense/horror is about the unknown, no matter what people like the makers of "saw" try to tell you.
This is not meant to dissuade you, as a fellow writer I encourage you to do it! But don't expect your story to fall into place right away, especially a suspense piece. Try developing your characters first before you develop what the fear factor is.
That said there can be a lot of things scary to people.
When I do my character treatments for my screenplays one of the things I list is, in fact, fears. I am soon going to engage myself (god help me) into an x-4 screen play. Purely for sh*ts and giggles. One of the thins I will ask myself is "What is storm, logan, nightcrawler, etc.. afraid of?" Storm? Heights. Logan? The Past. Nightcrawler? NOTHING. (jk)
But when you're writing original characters it's MUCH MUCH harder.
Example:
Bobby Edward McLovin is afraid of...what?
Well let's look at Bobby's life first. Where did he grow up? Who are his parents and does he know them? Who was he raised with, how was he raised, are their siblings, and what other minute details can you give yourself about your character. Within MOMENTS you will have paragraphs of information about this "bobby" including a school, a degree (if he's old enough) a career, family history, and what you're looking for, a FEAR.
My ten fears, (because you asked) are nonsensical.
1. Horses
2. Spiders
3. Zombies
4. Dying alone
5. Large moving objects (like elephants. only when they rush though)
6. Losing someone I love to something preventable.
7. Apocalypse (not the character, the event.)
8. my heart not working right
9. Stroke
10. Dying a virgin. <---not a fear anymore.
I came up with these years ago and though their placement may have changed they're all the same. If i were a character in your book what would the event be, this horror event that is? What can you come up with that would fear me and the audience that is (if I am the main character) seeing the film/novel from my perspective?
Well I don't like large objects moving quickly so a large monster? Maybe a crazed gorilla like in Congo? Assuming you know my life, and you like the angry mean gorilla thing, how would you put me in the Congo or in a place where killer gorillas would threaten my life?
Or, let's say you chose the fear of dying alone? Combine that with zombies and you'll have every zombie film and most recently I Am Legend. You see, you're getting a STORY! You can start making events now! The best stories, okay films, have three acts. The first introduces the character and sets up the problem, the second is when the problem occurs and the character must solve it, the third is the act in which the solution is found or at least show (even if it's not used like in "28 Days Later" or "Dawn of the Dead.") As you can see, you have a lot of work ahead of you, but I would not for a second doubt your capabilities. Do you know why? Because you showed interest. That's the key factor, YOU want to do this. So DO IT. Practice. Write. Get some characters out and sketch them even. Give yourself some visuals and i swear by the end of a day, you'll have at least a synopsis to a good storyline. Anyone can do this, but because you WANT TO, you'll do it best.
1. Having my kids die/get badly harmed
2. Having my husband/other dear ones die/get badly harmed (mind you I still understand and accept the cycle of life ie that my parents will die some day)
3. Dying slowly in a terror filled way (ie burning/drowning/getting eaten by a bear)
4. Being in a tight/confined space
5. Being raped
6. Being mugged/hurt in a non sexual way
7. Arachnids
8. The unknown in the night (or afraid of the 'dark' as some may say).
9. Evil things ie spirits ect
10. Loosing my mind (oy! no comments from the peanut gallery!)

I have never thought of it but I'm sure rape is on a lot of girl's lists. I hate rape man that's so awful. What a terrible person you are if you do that.
I can honestly say few things scare me. And I can't really put them in much of an order cuz it's like comparing apples and oranges.
My mother dying
Other friends or family dying
Never getting married
Becoming crippled
sudden movements
things crawling on me
Not being liked
Not saving someone if I had the chance
4. Dog attacks. Or dogs that suddenly decide that I'm not their friend anymore. Started back in school days when I walked home. Had to go past houses with dogs that suddenly starts barking when I walked past. One day one of the houses' gates were open and they had a frikken doberman pincher. Those things are scary when they growl at you. I just backed away and went the very long scenic route to my house.
5. finding an insect on my body. More like a fright than a scare. But you'll also give an eeep if you suddenly hear that buzzing noise and find a cockroach, beetle or cricket on your shoulder.
6. the dark. I have an overactive imagination. I used to jump on to my bed when I was small. I always imagined something would grab, or cut my feet from under my bed if I got too close.
7. Losing something I worked on. It's a scare to work on a project, only to find it gone.
8. Bodily harm. Anything from broken bones to needles.
1. Loved ones dying (family, friends)
2. Accidents (Car/plane crashes, falling, slip on ice/stairs etc.)
3. violent/drunken/bad people (like conflicting people on the street )
4. Bodily harm (broken bones, getting crippled, losing sight, hearing etc.)
5. getting assaulted (aka. beaten up etc.)
6. Insects (spiders, roaches, wasps)
7. Dark places (dark rivers, streets, houses, rooms, alleyways)
8. Death (dying is probably the fear of every person including mine)
9. War (who is not afraid of war)
10. Natural disasters (Tsunami, flood, hurricane, snowstorm, thunderstorm, forest fire etc.)
1.) Family members dying: especially my twin sister
2.) Tornados: I almost lost my dad in a tornado
3.) Rape and then being tortured
4.) Cancer
5.) Aliens: Like some movies freak me out..not the super cheesey ones.
6.) Dying alone: I can deal with it but..I still don't wanna die alone.
7.) Being alone
8.) Snakes : Some are ok though
9.) Spiders: One day in Bio class I was sitting near the spider and snake cages. My teacher bragged about his African orange spider. Later on in the class he got a phone call. When he hung up he said that the spider wasn't African it was from the Amazon and it was on the top deadlest spiders in the world. He got it from some new pet store owner and there was a huge mix up. The zoo was suppose to have his spider. I almost fainted.
10.) Polka : seriously get away from me

4. Losing what health I've got,..
5. Losing my house,
6. Dying...
7.... all as a result of 100% preventable human stupidity. If it's age or natural disasters that cause any of that, I figure my number's probably up for it anyway, and might as well make the best of it.
Oh, and I'm not very keen on things like drowning, suffocation, strangulation, or anything that impairs my ability to breathe, and thanks to Stephen Spielberg, sharks still give me the willies. I can handle spiders. I think some snake varieties are cute. But I Can't. Stand. Sharks.
Meddle not with the heartstrings of fans, for we are powerful and hold your pursestrings.
Heh. I actually forgot the car accident one until you mentioned it, Ult. I'm frigging uncomfortable as all hell behind a wheel now, and still get cold sweats just thinking of driving.
As for actually being trapped? Well, I figure, been there done that, but holy HELL does it give me the creeps still. Do. Not. Like.
