bad pet ownership rant

Post by Twitch »

:yell

i really hate pet owners that think the life of their pet is so worthless that when told that they can no longer keep their pet they immediately think "well, ok then. i'll just let it out into the wild where it will have the best chances and can fend for itself." then when told by another simliar pet owner that "no, you can't do that. the pet WILL die a very slow and painful and terrified death." the owner says "well too bad! cause its MY decision and i've made it!" which to me sounds a lot like: "nah nah nah! i big person now and i don't give damn and i said was i going to do this so I'M going to do it and YOU can't stop ME!!" grah! it ticks me off something royal!

but then because i'm concerned about the pet i suck up all my nasty replies and quick comebacks and appoligize if i offeneded her and try desperately to offer alternatives. (most of which are thrown back at my face with the same kiddie trantrum attitude) "i am not going to put up posters. i don't have the time" "no one will want her anyway cause eveyone that's seen her says she's ugly" "they (the petstore) won't take her back anyway cause its been over 30 days" "i don't know where the spca is" "she'll be just as dead anyway" grah! again! after trying my damnest not to just reach through the computer screen and kill the owner myself i finally convince her to let ME take the pet to the SPCA and i'll pay for the surrender and everything. its not the best option but at least the pet is alive.

but of course that can't be the end of it. the spca closes at 4 and she doesn't get home til 4:30 so now i have to bring my friend into teh equation as well. she has to go in and pick up these pets from the owner tonight and house them at her place overnight til i get there tomorrow (an hour and a half car drive). and did i mention that my friend's mother absolutely HATES this type of pet... so after some grovelling and be indebted to my friend's mother for proably as long as i live everything is set up for me to bring the pet into the spca tomorrow... that is of course if MY parents allow me to do all this.

and what's on top of all this of course is that the owner still has the males and is going to keep them but can not be bothered to even find enough home for all the females. (i'm taking 2 (if my dad lets me) but that still leaves one out in the cold) if she is going to be so callous about the females i can only imgine how she's going to treat the males. *shakes head*

i'm not sure if it has something to do with the type of animal, perhaps she thinks that the ones she has have less life value then a dog or cat but i doubt it. she's an adult too so you can't jsut say she's being a stupid kid. oh and want to know what her mom thinks of the whole way she planned on getting rid of her "extra" pets? she approved! "yeah sure. i don't care how you get rid of them, just get rid of them." great thing to be teaching your daughter... i just hope that if she were to ever find herself pregnant with an unwanted child she doesn't through it away as well. though given the track record... *sighs*

so now i'm stuck in the middle and everything hinges on the good graces of my own parents even tough i'm an adult as well as i'm still living at home and as the saying goes :"my roof, my rules." *shakes head and sighs again* i shouldn't have gotten involved really but now that i am i have to carry through. if it turns out that dad changes his mind about being able to get a couple new babies then i have to show up at the shelter with 3 instead of one and have to pay $45 instead of $15 for animals that aren't even mine. and given the location and coommonly held feelings towards these types of pets they probably won't find homes anyway but at lest they'll have chance...

but that's my rant and i feel mildly better about everything now... well at least i'm not ready to seriously maime something now... bloody evil unthoughtful owners.... if you want to have a pet make sure you have room and know how to TAKE CARE of said pet... ugh!

OK - first off here is your provincial act.

The important bit of this is:

18(1) A person who has ownership, possession or the care and control of an animal shall provide the animal with food, water, shelter and care in accordance with the regulations.

18(2) A person who violates or fails to comply with subsection (1) commits an offence punishable under Part II of the Provincial Offences Procedure Act as a category C offence.

1958, c.52, s.4; 1990, c.61, s.133; 1997, c.27, s.5.

So...she would be breaking the law abandoning them...and plus I am sure there is something in the laws about releasing animals that can disrupt the ecosystem.

I could go on all day about idiots that don't care for their animals properly...but that is a 5 day conversation, so I will leave it at that for now.

Oh why must people be so retarded? Tattooed fish?

The dumbest quote from the pet store owner....
"My hope is if it gets more people into the hobby it's a good thing. If a kid comes in and sees a fish with a heart on it and says I want a fish tank and learns how to care for it, I think it's a win," says Lane.
Yeah...its a win for you. You make the money. The fish sure as shit doesn't win.

I don't know.

Great Dane's are pretty big. Maybe the guy just couldn't afford his ten million dollar a year dog food bill with his measly 7.8 million dollar contract?

Speaking of pet ownership - we had speakers from the ASPCA and PeTA at the vet school today. Apparently the PeTA representatives threatened the school right before they came (to find and set free all laboratory animals on site). The administration allowed them to come, but under security escort and all the vet students had to be checked in and our ID's verified. To enter and leave the classroom (imagine if highschool only had one classroom and that is what the vet school is like) we had to go through security as well.

I went to the talk. The ASPCA guy was good, but took forever to make a point. Basically he took 20 minutes to say: "If we're going to have pets we should make sure we're responsible for them". But he talked about good issues like why no-kill shelters don't work and how dog fighting is so hard to stop because it's becoming an extension of the whole "gangster culture" with really young kids getting involved.

The PeTA talk was also 20 minutes long and was everything one would expect from a PeTA talk. She took fully half her presentation to describe for us a single panel cartoon that was up on the screen about how all animals just want to run around free outside and have fun. And here I thought the point of single panel cartoons was to get an idea across quickly. Silly me. :)

During the rest of the presentation she accused us of "species prejudice" because we eat only certain animals and keep others as pets (rather than eat them too?). Then she showed us one of those shock films about animal cruelty.

The problem was - her audience was too educated. Most, if not all of us have been to a factory farm, an animal research facility, the circus, etc. We know how they run, what the conditions are really like for the animals, and that those films were either: a) procured in the 1970's before various legistation was in place b) from other countries that we can't control or c) came out of situations were there were problems so the facility was shut down.

So that was kind of a lot of hassle today for a pretty pointless hour. Everything the ASPCA guy said was good, but we'd all heard him speak before last year so none of it was new and we agreed with him anyway. The PeTA representative who spoke may have had a good point to make, but it was lost in the rhetoric so I'm not sure what it was. She ended up just sounding naive and pissing off the administration with the security crap.

I want my hour back.

thats like the horse i'm going to train, the owners had loads of money and horses and didn't think that one little baby was important so he wasn't fed or taken under shelter...ever!!! He is a registered black quarter horse but when my friend got him he was golden/palimino coloured, bleached by the sun, he was little for a yearling and sickly and he just didn't grow after he got better he is like 12 hand high or so know after 2 years of good food and good care, the people had the money but they just didn't care and so he starved, my friend has raise him as a pet though and he is healthy and happy and really friendly, you would never guess he wasn't touched till he was a year old
