New Musicians -- WHO DO YOU LIKE?

Post by Ult_Sm86 »

There's very few artists who can pull off a hip-hop cover with as much class as Lissie does, but when I first heard her cover of kId CuDi's song Pursuit of Happiness, I know for fact that this chick was awesome.

For Non-Americans who can't use VEVO

One of the few artists in the last 3 years or so who I just went out and got everything by that person I could get my hands on. Within 2 days, I already have most of her publicly released work.

Some of her other great songs:

When I'm Alone

In Sleep'

Little Lovin'

The great thing about her is she sounds like Stevie Knicks (sorta) but with a very mean-blues-streak. Combine that with a sort of folky-country tweak and then throw in a dash of alternative influences and that's really all of what I think makes her up. She's just a tremendous musician. And she's cute! (That's always a plus! :3 )

New Musicians -- WHO DO YOU LIKE?

Post by Bamfette »

Do they have to be new? I mean... I listen to a lot of music, but haven't found anyone NEW recently that's really done anything for me.

http://www.last.fm/user/RayeGunn

Yeah, I'm a metal head. But mostly weird progressive, folk or symphonic metal. (which probably explains the shortage of new material to choose from) Samples of some of my favorites that have, at the very least, put out new stuff within the last couple years:

Amorphis:
http://youtu.be/QtdfQPEjTRw
http://youtu.be/9rs-or7As0k
http://youtu.be/MkRxjrlgzp0
http://youtu.be/vjlpFZ9R_WA

Apocalyptica:
http://youtu.be/AYa1OlWH_Zo
http://youtu.be/jsYcRSNL8To
http://youtu.be/2JzFgvdo4Pk

Katatonia:
http://youtu.be/an-nknHiaiU
http://youtu.be/moZwgUex4aA
http://youtu.be/6ow7rqkY-jI
http://youtu.be/YPGTEJbDfYo

Eluveitie (it's prounounced El-vey-tee):
http://youtu.be/msRy4vcSX4k
http://youtu.be/mpGT5PJviiQ
http://youtu.be/7Es3WI4iiHE

Turisas:
http://youtu.be/7woW7DmnR0E
http://youtu.be/cdkBs0VCSX0
http://youtu.be/WIwBsL4KrFw
http://youtu.be/1x-5ZkTMyMc

Wait! there is one new band I discovered that's awesome. (but I don't want to waste the time I've spent digging up the above links, so they're staying)

Coppelius:
http://youtu.be/Lkb9n3L3cxk
http://youtu.be/n-Hk5lH4cCY
http://youtu.be/CAmvJ-LHAi4
they're a bit weird, it's like... Steampunk metal performance art with clarinets. but in the most awesome way possible. And they are pretty new, or at least not well known, despite all the videos. (also, the Butler is hot as hell)

and now that I think about it there are 2 other fun Steampunk-y bands.

The Cog is Dead:
http://youtu.be/tq7XG4XOJsc
http://youtu.be/ly6hkp9_kh0
they only have one CD out to date, sadly.

and this one is so new there are only 2 songs to post, they've not yet released their album.

Clockwork Quartet:
http://youtu.be/zBFtWyvRMOk
http://youtu.be/u4YuqjsVhfo

... I did warn you i had kind of odd taste. :p

I was saying new so that we could exchange artists people haven't really heard. Anyone with quirky tastes can blow away someone who listens to the radio on a daily basis, that's a given. I figured we all listen to a wide enough variety that new stuff is a good place to start.

And yeah, I like some of that. I'm not really big into metal (Hell, I'm really not into metal at all) -- some of this doesn't even sound metal -- but I can see myself making some mixes and putting one or two of those jams on there.

Where did you first hear Clockwork Quartet?

Coppelius! The only thing that I have ever encountered that made me guilty about switching from clarinet!

At the moment I'm trying out The End Men I'm not sure whether I really like them or I'm simply okay with them, however. I think it's the secondary vocals that are throwing me, not quite strong enough for me in the style. But over all they're growing on me so shall get a mention here. Other than that I'm afraid I don't have anything that I would say fall under 'new' in my usual music obsessions list. I'm afraid I've went back to obsessing over Murder By Death instead of seeking out new things.

Is this where I post about my fascination with all kinds of German music? :shifty (Except for what is actually popular in Germany, I can't stand that stuff.)

Peter Fox (hiphop)
Schwarz zu Blau
Haus am See

Welle Erdball (bitpop)
Lass uns ein Computer sein

Sido (rap)
Hey Du

Unheilig (industrial pop)
Spiegelbild
Auf zum Mond

And One (synthpop/EBM)
Zerstörer

Eisbrecher (industrial metal)
Leider

Melotron (electro pop)
Manchmal

Well... hello there. :naughty

I heard of Clockwork Quarted via a webcomic, of all places: http://sydneypadua.com/2dgoggles/
and all the ones before i got into the steampunk stuff was metal... it's just that metal is a very, very diverse genre... lots of different sounds. I don't like all metal by a long stretch

German bands are pretty awesome, (I had heard Eisbrecher and Unheilig before, they're pretty cool) though I tend to like Finnish bands the best, for some reason. It's not like i seek them, out, it just happens. Amorphis, Apocalyptica and Turisas from my list above are all Finnish. And there's more awesome ones too, like Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Ensiferum, Swallow the Sun...

but speaking of weird but awesome German bands, i present Corvus Corax:

http://youtu.be/aC96H7beaDg

and ASP

I didn't start out seeking out German music specifically. I definitely do it now though. I'll check those out too, thanks. :)

I have lots of English-speaking German bands I could recommend too, but I haven't been listening to them so much lately.

I don't really pay enough attention to music to know who's super new and super obscure and the like, but I've been on a Metric kick of late. For the past few years, whenever I'd hear a song on my iPod that I wasn't sure who the band was but I loved, it was always Metric (I tend to add in bulk). I had one of their albums I listened to religiously, and then they were featured in Scott Pilgrim last year, so it seems their celebrity has grown.

Some favs:

Combat Baby

Wet Blanket

Rock Me Now

And of course:
Black Sheep

So I've become a Manchester Orchestra fan over the last year or so, having seen them perform twice.

The first time was actually for them, they and Brand New were heading a line-up at Lupos. Brand New was awful, Manchester Orchestra had awesome performing skills... with pretty much zero stage presence unfortunately.

BUT, the second time they opened for My Chemical Romance & Blink-182 on the Civic Tour and while their stage presence has not gotten better, I discovered two things
1) I really enjoy them

2) They had a new album come out since the last time I saw them.

I was stunned I had missed this.

It's called "Simple Math" and the titular song has an incredibly artistic, wonderful, music video.

Some of their other jams I find quite appealing are as follows:

I Can Feel Your Pain

I Can Feel A Hot One

Shake It Out

I'd also like to introduce some of you to Hanni El Khatib.

Come Alive is the most frequently played tune on the radio but some of you might recognize this jam from some converse commercials:
Build. Destroy. Rebuild.

I love the opening of this song the best. The crunchy guitar plus the savory voice? Takes me back to early 90's punk/grunge. It's fantastic.
I hear some heavy Ramones influence in here as well as Johnny Cash if you can believe it.

I was gonna post a list of my all time favorite musicians, but my internet crashed and the post is gone, so here is my Last FM which hasn't updated since my computer is to old to scrobble anymore.

and I recently realized I like which girls ganstah rappin' so I have been listening to a lot of kreayshawn, and her hilarious lyrics.
Kreayshawn - Gucci Gucci

Kreayshawn - Bumpin' Bumpin'

Kreayshawn - Rich Whore
