Hand Creams (Cremes?) what do you use?

Post by Ult_Sm86 »

So I'm having major skin irritation issues for multiple reasons which, should the information be needed for the upcoming question, I will then let you in on.

This skin problem has made me try various types of hand moisturizer. Medicated, "Chapped Hands" specific, all sorts of kinds... nothign seems to work.

So far I got some great stuff called C.O. Bigelow No. 1912 "Chapped Hands Remedy"
It's pretty good... but not enough.
I think the dish water is what does it, though i could be wrong.

Hand Creams (Cremes?) what do you use?

I use Bath and Body Works Warm Vanilla Sugar Body Cream. SWEAR BY IT. I use it CONSTANTLY. and I mean that. I put it on my feet when I wake up, after a shower, before I go to bed, and before and after I put on/take off socks. I carry a bottle in my purse b/c I put it on anywhere from 5-20 times a day. and always after I dry my hands after they've been wet. sadly, I've become addicted. but I always smell nice and have soft hands and feet! :D

I swear by Handy Gurugu By Lush. Or Smitten by them also works really well for hands.

Well...I know many a farmer who swears by bag balm. You can now even get it in human containers rather than having to go to a feed store and picking up a cow sized container. Alas everyone is different, but at least bag balm doesn't smell as...well...girly? LOL

Yeah, my dad always uses bag balm, but on the down side even he's complained that it's greasy and nasty. I've used the Neutrogena 'Norwegian formula' hand lotions before. And Avon's Silicon Glove. Neither of those are particularly girly.

This whole topic just makes me think one thing: It rubs the lotion on its skin...

In the clinic I was washing my hands around 10 - 20 times per day so dryness was a problem.

The Body Shop's Hemp Hand Protector was very popular at the vet school. Most of us (including me) had a tube of it hanging around. It completely fixes chapped hands from over washing. I used to have terrible cracks and stuff and they've completely gone away.

When it's too much water/washing that's causing the dryness, you want something that's based on fats (like EFAs) because fat is hydrophobic (water repelling). Putting it on regularly will make your hands hydrophobic, decreasing the contact with water, and thus reducing the damage the water and soap are doing.

I like the hemp one, but any EFA based moisturizer will do.

Rubber gloves. I wear them when I wash dishes and I spend half my life in front of the sink (the other half yakking on the internet).

As for hand lotion: Vaseline Intensive Care.

YES.

I used Glysomed for awhile when I worked at the newspaper factory and touching all that newspaper dried out my hands. It was good, but not sure how hardcore it is. My hands weren't that bad.
