Thundercats Reboot
So I know Star, Matt, tears and myself have been watching this and discussing, I figured maybe we could open it up.
So far and overall I've been enjoying the new series (thought it will never take the place of the original in my heart). The quite drastic changed to the original set up and plot are understandable (since the original really didn't make much sense) and while I have a few gripes here and there overall it's good, the new character designs in particular I'm digging (with the possible exception of Cheetara ... her boobs scare me)
I'm not to keen on the new Lion-O, he's a bit too much of the 'unsure of him self, emo around the edges' prince-hero type, but from what we've seen of the other characters they look to be a good bunch, my current favourites being Tygra and Panthro. I have to say that I was disappointed that after the very dramatic opening we had several episodes of 'filler' focused only on Lion-O, but after the last two weeks the other Cats seem to be making more of an mark. I was stupidly happy to see Kat and Kit make themselves useful last week.
Up until last week I found it enjoyable but not really memorable, but last week's episode 'Journey to the Tower of Omens' has really got me intrigued as to what's going to happen next and what has happened in the Cat's past. If they stick to the plot and don't clog it up with too many filler episodes we might actually have a half-decent reboot here.
And of course, you have to love all the little easter eggs with regards to the original series Larry Kenney as Clawdius yelling 'Thundercats HOOOO!', 'What's a samophlange?' and the King in the flashback last week wearing the original Lion-O costume in particular had me happy geek-clapping.
Anyone else have any thoughts?

I started watching this today! I think they did a great job on this reboot, like you said, the original didn't have much of sense for the setting, but this new one looks like they tried to fill in more details, cultures and societies and such for the animals.
For some reason this reminds me of Pirates of Darkwater.... don't know why.
Anyhow, gonna try and catch up on all the episodes tomorrow.

Wait until you get to the most recent one steyn, no spoilers but there's a flashback with Mumm-Ra that had me going "Ooooooooooh!" with regards to fleshing out the cultures.

I am totally into the new Thundercats. So far, it's really engaging and fun. Getting the old Lion-O to do the voice of the king was AWESOME.
My only problem so far with it is that I'm a bigtime Tygra fan. I love his costume, I love his character design, I love his new backstory and attitude...but I really wish he used his bolo whip more. I mean, yeah, realistically, that blaster pistol is going to be a more effective weapon most of the time, but the bolo whip is *so cool.*

I know, when he got the gun I was like "But ... but where's his whip!?" Also he didn't use his invisibility for a while either which made me sad, I was stupidly happy to see them return and have him kick ass with them.
I really hope at some point they explain why he can turn invisible, it was never explained in the original as far as I can remember. I know the idea comes from tiger's being camouflaged from their stripes in the wild but what about Tygra ... is he a wizard? Or is it just some kind of racial ability for all Tigers?
And if he does have some kind of magical abilities, how long till he swaps the pistol for fireballs?

I have to agree that it's nice to have some context on the setting and cultures and all that. It makes things much more understandable.
As for characters, Lion-O doesn't bother me too much, as he's been developing each episode into what I hope will be some semblance of what he was in the original. I'm a bit meh on Cheetara. She just randomly popped up in the first episode, was a cleric, and has been a crush for Lion-O. I feel like something else needs to be done with her because Lion-O, Tygra, and Panthro have all this backstory that makes them awesome. I kind of feel the same way about Wiley Kit and Kat, but I don't mind it as much because they're adorable and amusing.
I'm pretty fond of Panthro and Tygra so far as well, except I mainly love Tygra because he's sort of an ass. The way Panthro was introduced to the series was something I found interesting, seeing as he was the only one that wasn't just there.
I really need to rewatch the last episode because all I remember was how awesome Mumm-Ra was and how nice it was to see the Sword of Omens enhancing the other cats and not just Lion-O.
Overall, I just find it really enjoyable and fun to watch and that's all it really has to be for me to like it.

Cheetara is one of the things I'm not so keen on in the reboot. In the original it was pretty obvious she and Tygra were together and while there's been some indication that Tygra has a thing for her, it's still a bit meh. I agree with tears that she needs fleshing out more, 'cos at the moment she's just the eyecandy and Lion-O's yes man.
Hopefully when we get to the City of El-Dara (which we'd better do otherwise that's just such a lame plot device) we'll get a bit more back story on Kit and Kat.
And yes, the assyness is what makes Tygra such a great character xD
Oh, one thing that's been bugging me. The tails. Why do only Wiley Kit and Kat have them and what happened to Panthro's? He had one in the flashbacks but not now Some sort of rite of passage?

I'm just excited to see my youth and childhood still holds some relevance in today's youth. It's good to know those things can still be popular.
I'm hoping this leads to a movie.
I'm also hoping Seth McFarlane gets involved. Such a good Liono.

finally caught up on all the episodes. I gotta agree with pup on the whole filler episodes with emo lion-o. Not a good look for a lion king. Also hoping for back stories for the rest of the group.
I also noticed the missing tail on panthro. Especially when you got other cats with tails in the show as well. I would have thought chopping off a tail would be counterproductive for keeping one's balance, especially when falling like a cat. Hopefully the animators are just lazy and forgets to add the tails.

This thread is making me want to start a thread for listing shows I wish would either come back on the appropriate networks or could get remade into awesome new shows.
Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers comes to mind first as well as Digimon.
(DIGIMON: FIRST CLASS! What a great title!!!)
I was able to catch the first episode of this show though, and I gotta say....
Thundercats has come a long way. Much improvement.

The fish people episode was pretty awesome. The "water that's not water" thing was a little weird (maybe I missed something?), but it was FISH PIRATES.
On that note, I really like that there's an abundance of appearances from the other races of Third Earth / Thundera. It's not Sslythe as the only lizard person for light years, there's a WHOLE RACE of lizards! Then they gave us the team of specialist lizards with different powers and I couldn't help thinking "This is totally a superhero show."
Of course, that means that it doesn't feel the same as the old Thundercats, really, but I think it's great for today. That worked then, this works now. One big change that I reeeeally love is that Cheetara is now a badass. She was a mage, she fights full on, and she keeps up or outclasses Lion-O and Tygra at almost every turn.
For a few episodes, my main thought, despite enjoying what was going on in the show, was "Where's Panthro?" He had just that minor cameo (actually Mumm-Ra in disguise) in the first episode and then THREE WHOLE EPISODES passed without so much as a mention of him. And then...what an entrance! He reminds me a lot of Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop, not just in appearance (bald with shaggy sidebeard) but also in attitude.

Okay, we're eight episodes in and I'm starting to get reeeeeeally sick of all the attention being on Lion-O, the support characters of the episode (like the Drifter, that plant kid) have had way more character development then the other Cats

I liked the Drifter, but I guess that's only because he was a kickass bunny. Anyhow, I agree with you, pup. I want to see more backstory or character development in the other characters, not just lion-o.
