[November Spotlight On!] Excalibur: Nightcrawler versus Black Air

Post by Slarti »

For this month, we’ll take you back to one of the glory days when Kurt was the leader of Excalibur, had a spine, and actually acted like a leader. ;) Let's remember Warren Ellis's ass-kicking, if unfortunately hairless and togaed Kurt!

"But as team leader I cannot allow these people to mock us like this"

"I havent seen Wagner like this before Kitty...."
"It's not often Kurt gets annoyed, but when he does...."

"Don't worry about me. They have succeeded in making me angry."

I remember getting goosebumps when I read that for the first time...lol!

Pissed off...taking charge.... and ready to take names and kick ass! Far, far cry from his insecure, 'mascot' days.....;)

VERY much enjoyed Ellis' Kurt Wagner.
Oh and absolutely LOVED Larroca's work on the title back then!

Thanks for the awesome memories SLARTI!!

Thanks Slarti, too.

Yep, this was a great time.
I really liked Carlos Pacheco's costume.
I remember I met the guy at a convention, and he was kinda sad the costume didn't last.

A more offensive Kurt, with a sword.
That's how I like the elf ! :)

oooooh. Nice. I like.
But why does he look like he just jumped out of Captain blood and grew a tail? 'Cause the bottommost panel profile pic of him does look that way.

Oh heavens, it's the Napkin Outfit!!! :D

Lol, Ellis was great. This was a good story arc, too... plan backfired pretty badly, but the Peteys saved the day, if I remember right.

Yay for Leader Kurt and that totally awesome "I pity the fool" glare!

Liked to see Kurt all angry and taking charge, but there was so much about that whole point in Excalibur that was just... off, in my opinion.

Any explanation as for why he carried a sword when later in Unlimited, he said he didn't feel the need to arm himself, as his opponents often provided enough weaponry for him? I mean, it's not that I mind him carrying a cutlass, but a little consistency would be nice.

Really disliked the look they gave him at the time.

And of course, I associate those times in Excalibur with Amanda returning, but she's not even Jimaine in disguise, she's Margali, or something like that. Blech.

Must. Focus. On. The. Positive.

Liked Kurt taking charge and being a leader.

I do love when Kurt shows his harder side and I would love to see it more often. And a more pro-active approach = yay! I wish this could have continued. I wish Excalibur would have become more of a force to be reckoned with, with Kurt as the noble, suave, charming, caring but hard as steel leader.

But that costume...no no no. FIRST you put on pants, THEN you lead an assault.

And while people love Kurt with swords, I think it's silly unless he's ready to kill with it. It was odd, seeing him standing amongst the piles of fallen enemies, because are we supposed to assume he just knocked them out with the flat??

I agree with that. When I first saw it, I thought it looked like a Halloween costume. Everyone else was dressed fairly normally.

You are right about the swords, too. They look cool, but why have them if he isn't prepared to skewer someone?

This is so going to show my grammar nazi side, but I hate this:
And a more pro-active approach
Pro-active is not a word. The word I think you're going for was preemptive.

but I do agree with you on the sword bit. It looks awesome, but sans obvious skewering marks I'd hesitate to say it's useful, really.

In that form - 'pro-active' - it may not be, but 'proactive' most certainly is a word. So sayeth Oxford.
