At the same time, I gotta be me. :bamf
WoW! Just discovered this particular thread and I am ecstatic after reading this! DARICK those are the versions that I grew up being crazy about as well.

COCKRUM : Classic. Sleek and Muscular. Kurt in his original costume? No one does it like Dave.

BYRNE : kicked a@@ during the 'golden' years of Uncanny but I sometimes felt like he was slowly turning Kurt into this little mascot, animal thingie. (Hard to express what i'm trying to say, but the ish where BYRNE drew Kurt jumping on top of Wolvie with his hair standing up after being surprised by SNOWBIRD's Polar bear form...AARGH!)

SMITH : Aww man I really, really loved SMITH's interpretaion! Clean, polished and dynamic. Fond memories of his short-lived run on Uncanny. ( His version of Colossus really kicked a@@ as well.)

DAVIS : WoW. Those gorgeous early EXCALIBUR issues after being 'angry' at Marvel for having Kurt in Mutant-Massacre induced comic-book limbo for sooo long....absolute bliss! DAVIS' second stint on that title was just as incredible. WoW.

HUGHES : The 1st time I saw his rendition of Nightcrawler in that X-MEN/WILDC.A.T.S crossover I was completely blown away! I've been jonesin' for him to get another shot at drawing Kurt ever since.

DARICK I absolutely love what i've seen from you so far! As if I wasnt excited enough just from the fact of Kurt actually getting his own series.... knowing that youre rendition is in part inspired by all of my favorite interpretions..... :D WoW!

I like Cockrum's Nightcrawler best, but I've seen Darick's work somewhere and I like it very much.

Says you!
:surpriseI'm going through withdrawl for the second iss.

I have always loved Dave's version, but I also love Alan Davis' (as I think I already told Darick)But I can see the different styles in your Nightcrawler, yet it is your own.

I can handle a Grumpy Kurt...as long as it doesn't last.

Cockrum, Smith, Davis and Hughes : yep, tey're the definitive artists for Nightcrawler. I'd add Leinil Yu, too. And now Darick. :)
As for Byrne, I don't know... It's true he was aboard when Uncanny became Marvel's most popular series , but I kinda dislike his Kurt.
Too skinny, too crouched, and the hair... :X
His Wolverine, his Storm, his Dark Phoenix were awesome ! But not his Nightcrawler. And I think it did the character a disservice, back on those days. He seemed too fragile.

He looked way to old in his last solo series. I was pointing out all the flaws in them to my best friend. She finally told me that if I didn’t shut up she was going to kick me. I loved the cover art though.

That's what I thought too, I mean the cover was godly, the the art was all boxy and I felt robbed, but didn't give a crap, cause it was Kurt. You should've kicked her for suggesting hurting you over Kurt's appearance.:LOL:D

DITTO! I mean, I fell in love with the X-MEN during the BYRNE/AUSTIN years (Cant forget TERRY AUSTIN!), and was a BYRNE junkie for a loooong time.
Maybe it was my imagination, but it just kinda felt to me like he had a hand in slowly but surely delegating Kurt into "easily defeated, comic relief, mascot status". :mad Sorta like he had to play down Kurt and some of the other X-characters to help emphasize what a bad-ass his obvious favorite X-man was. (you know who)

Or maybe I was just paranoid cuz I was such a Nightcrawler junkie ? :?

Nah, I got the same feeling. Byrne's Kurt was like a mascot.
I would be curious to hear about people who met the Kurt character then and loved him best.
Me, I met Nightcrawler with the first issue of Excalibur... very difficult not to like him !!

(and yep, Austin's work was amazing)

Most definitely! Those early EXCALIBUR issues were incredible. And PAUL SMITH had such a kick-a@@ version. The original BROOD saga... the first time the X-MEN were introduced to the MORLOCKS. When SMITH left the title after only about 10 issues or so I remember feeling like i'd been punched in the gut :(

Alan Davis's work:love*drool* Especially that one pic they used to have of Kurt During Excalibur here in the gallery before it went down, labled "ticked Kurt"...he's gorgeous when he's angry.

Your a hero in my book, Darick. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. Nightcrawler: the ongoing solo series (a dream come true)

Larroca's Kurt is a little like a mascot. He always has him purched on somebody, especially in Juggernauts hand.:LOL

Ditto CURLYYHAIRGIRL about DAVIS' Kurt!
Speaking of an 'angry' Kurt, one of my favorite all-time ALAN DAVIS/NIGHTCRAWLER moments was waaay back in EXCALIBUR #....hmmmn ...I think it was like 52 or something. An enraged Kurt, unable to teleport, opens up a can of hand-to-hand whoop a@@ on a swarming mob of monstrously mutated carnivores trying to make a meal of his comatose teamates SHADOWCAT and CERISE.

A definite must-read for Nightcrawler fans!

Oh, and although he did tend to draw Kurt a little on the small side I kinda liked LARROCA's version. Maybe it was cuz it reminded of another artist who's rendition I also liked a lot.... The oft forgotten CARLOS PACHECO!

Dynamic positions are this guys specialty and it was a treat seeing him handle the characters' inherent gracefullness and agility.

Too bad I will neverbe able to take such an issue out of it's plastic covering they put it in at the comic store. I'd slobber all over it and then it would be ruined.:( * I need my angry Elf*

DARICK I am really loving your current run over in WOLVERINE, and was extremely happy to learn that you were the NIGHTCRAWLER series' regular artist! You obviously love the character and it's showing in your work. (A friend of mine gave me a TRANSMETROPOLITAN trade paperback to read a few years ago and i've been hooked on your stuff ever since!)
Man, now that I think about youve got an X-junkies' dream gig...regular penciller for both WOVERINE and NIGHTCRAWER!! :eek

Aww man, I am SooOOoo jealous!!!
There was a promotional piece PACHECO did years ago when EXCALIBUR disbanded and NIGHTCRAWLER, COLOSSUS and KITTY had re-joined the X-MEN. It's one of my all-time favorite team shots of the X-MEN and the postion that he has Kurt in at the bottom of the splash page is just amazing.

It's been a poster on my wall for a looooong time....:)
