Hellboy
I have to admit, I was pretty much ignorant of this series until the movie came out a few years ago- but when I saw the film, I enjoyed it way more than I'd anticipated. (Definitely more than the first and last X-men movies!) I love the characters and designs- and the sort of freedom that that sort of series lends itself to.
I've only been able to flip through some of the TPBs, but I did purchase one of the recent animated films and thoroughly enjoyed it. The art is dynamic and exciting to look at (and some moments in 'Sword of Storms' made me laugh out loud...)
Of the series- I'm a huge Abe Sapien fan. This probably stemmed from David Hyde Pierce's voicing the character in the live action movie, (love him as a VA!) but the more I learn and read, the more I enjoy the character.
Anyways- I was wondering if anyone else was interested in this comic.
(I think Kurt and HB should totally team up and kick some demon booty!)

That's insanely endearing! I'll have to find it. It would also be cute if they met up again later- HB wouldn't seem much older, but Kurt would have grown up .... aw man!!! I have to run off and write that now, don't I?

Huh- well I thought I'd update my findings...
I've since purchased two Hellboy novelizations, and one anthology of short stories (so far, the most satisfying fiction based on comics I've read) as well as the other animated film 'Blood and Iron'- which I enjoyed more than 'Sword of Storms'.
I want to pick up Abe Sapien's mini, but can't seem to find the first issue. Dork.
Can't wait for July 11th!

You should try to get BPRD 1946. It's a continuation of some kind of the Hellboy vampire story. Very good and kind of stand alone.
The Abe Sapien mini is...meh, it's neither very good nor very bad up until now. The art is par. I'd strongly recommend the last part of BPRD which is called Killing ground. Very nicely done with good mistery and characterization.
I have to say that I think the BPRD stories are generally better than the Hellboy ones. But I'm more a fan of teambooks, so that could be it.

You know, somewhere in the Fuzzy Visions & Three-Toed Tales thread there's a fic of Hellboy meeting a young NC and takes him on as a sidekick. I liked it.
Too bad I can't be buggered to hunt for it.
...
I liked the movie, not so hot on the books. I'm told that this is because I am a "story person" and not an "art person".

yep, too bad i'm too lazy to go hunt for it either. well, it's either still there or it may have disappeared like some threads that I noticed had disappeared.
But chances are that it's still somewhere there, deep in the old threads.

I must be an art person then. Anyone who has hung out in chat while I've talked about Hellboy and Mike Mignola's artwork has by now realized that for me, Mignola page = art porn.
(I have admitted that I would rather own an original Mignola page to look at than have really awesome mind bending life altering sex. I still stand by this.)
In fact, the only reason I haven't picked up any of the B.P.R.D. books is because Mignola didn't draw them. It sounds like the stories are good though so maybe I should get over myself.

I didn't think Mignola was drawing a lot of the actual HB comics these days- but I think I just may have misread the Dark Horse forums.
For those of you who are "story people" or like "team books" better- I would recommend the novelizations. I read "On Earth as it is in Hell" and I'm working through "Unnatural Selection" and both so far have been entertaining reads. I also liked "Odd Jobs" (the short story compilation) although most of the stories are just Hellboy.
Actually, I got a pleasant surprise today when I picked up an issue of 'Piq"- there was a blurb about HB2, as well as some samples from an Hellboy and BPRD comic.
I think I would really like the BPRD series- I too am more interested in teams (okay, really I'm most interested in Abe...) than JUST Hellboy doin' his stuff. Which is like saying I like raspberry cheesecake better than strawberry cheesecake.
I like Abe well enough that I'd probably buy even a sub par series, just to have fun fish boy story to look at.

I love Hellboy. Mignola's art is fantastic. The writing is hard for me to comment on, because it's so very basic, kind of formulaic and yet it still works. I think the art carries it a lot.
I also love BPRD 1946. I thought both the writer and the artist there did a great job. Abe Sapien's, I haven't read yet.
