From the latest installment of "Twisted Toyfare Theatre"

Fuck them. We get enough of this type of shit from whiny fanboys online. I don't need to see them in print.

That sucks! They are still lashing out at Chuck even after he's gone. Sad. Not to mention they used Nightcrawler to do it. A jab at Chuck's Draco arc no doubt..

Strange tho. When I first looked at it I thought it was from Wizard.

Yeah, I remember seeing that issue. A co-worker at the comic shop I work at felt obligated to point that out. I think the conversation went something like this...

Co-worker: Hey, did you read the new Twisted Toyfare?
idsunki: No, not yet, I've been busy working.
CW: Well, it's got something really funny involving Nightcrawler, I'll bet you like it!
id: Alright, let's give this a little read-through...
CW: *stands expectantly, reading over shoulder, waiting for the laugh*
id: Huh. One panel to further bash Chuck Austen.
CW: Yeah, because I think we'll all agree that he really screwed X-Men up!
id: *blank stare* But I liked Austen's stuff.
CW: Really? I thought you hated it!
id: No. I liked it. We've had this conversation like, five times already. Anytime someone bashes Chuck Austen, you tell me about it expecting me to jump right in, then act surprised when I say I like it.
CW: Really?
id: Yes, really. Now, Chris Claremont, on the other hand...

...so it goes.

I... dont get it... I guess.

People get made fun of in print all the time, its not like this is something new and Chuck is the only one to ever get made fun of, so whats the big deal? Assholes are gonna have their opinons.

Christina Aguilera gets made fun of constantly on a much larger scale in magazines and on TV & radio..... I love her, but so people make fun of her, big deal, who cares? I'm not gonna go protest at MadTV because they made fun of her.

I agree that it's not on, not because I'm an indignant fan, but because it's so petty, tastless and a waste of dead tree. I never bought Toyfare, I#d read it propped up against the counter at my comic book shop and always found it funny but this is just....'oh I ran out of ideas so lets make a dumb dig!'

I don't particularly agree/disagree with any arguments for or against Chuck Austen. I simply think it's a rather tasteless slur on someone who doesn't deserve it.

And the "Voo-hoo" pisses me off, but that's just me. ;)

Pfff. I usually enjoy the Toyfare theater, even if it's not very clever.

But that is a stupid lowblow. :mad

You know, it doesn't really surprise me : it seems Wizard and Toyfare always speak in a single voice when it comes to comic-books. It's as if they knew THE truth and that they couldn't understand that one can think differently.

I agree with you bunny, I don't see anything that is over the top offensive here its just silliness. I don't think this would constitute a low blow either, Its not like theyre making fun of chuck austen personally, just his work in uncanny( personally it wasn't my favorite writing on uncanny, but There has been PLENTY of wrinting in uncanny that hasn't been my favorite.) Anyway, I think the humor of the strip seems to lie in the whole idea of marvel continuity "move to strike austens work from the continuity ". The poke seems to be at that whole silliness that occurs in the continuity of the books which is a direct result of different writers taking over and changing the direction of the book. I think the strip is pretty funny when viewed from that perspective, and she hulk is awesome in her purple buisness suit. ( is there a full body shot of her?) oh, and what the heck is that blue root vegtable looking creature that she hulk is addressing? I don't recognize him

I think that "root creature" is one of the old Transformers villains from the late 80s. The "judges" that would rotate faces around when they gave their decrees?

What has me cocking my head is the "I don't suck anymore" line. Um... wait... Aside from a silly attempt at a German accent, doesn't a character need a sucky conception to suck at all? No matter what happens to him, if he's got a cool concept, he's going to be cool, and if he has a sucky concept, he's going to have a hard time *not* sucking at whatever he does.... Ahh, well. Me and semantics.....

To me, it's like taking shots at Kerry for the election. It's done, it's over with, the fuckers won, let it go. Any further shots are cheap at best.

*Tries not to laugh but can't help it*

Yeah, the joke's old and pointless as hell now that Austen's gone. But there's something about a toy Nightcrawler proclaiming his lack of sucking that will always make me laugh.

I would just have my lurking laugh at the comic but since Bunny admitted to laughing I feel safe enough to post.

He sucked (sucks?) because Austen changed his concept from freaky mutant wondering why he's here to freaky demon mutant who knows he was born to be a minor pawn in the giant plot of some... guy who wants to rule the world.

I guess we all walk away from the Draco arc with different interpretations, because I saw "Azazel" as just another a powerful mutant. (Albeit an amoral one who assumed the role of something supernatural for political reasons, then started "buying into his own press".) And considering neither Azazel nor Kurt seem to have any traditional "demon restrictions", I'm still sticking to my "100% mutant" theory. (Yeah, I know Warren's blood burned Kurt that one time, but considering it's never happened before or since, I'm gonna chalk that up to the interactions of a foreign dimension....)

My question is this: Just how, exactly, does that make him suck?

If nothing else, I feel it helped his character by solving the very question you mention. He knows why he is here and he realizes that he never really needed to know because he's already risen above that. Without ever knowing, he'd have probably never come to that realization.
