Y: The Last Man General Discussion

Post by Crawler »

Issue 23 came out this week and it may just be the best issue of any comic that I've ever read.

Oh, and here's a thread for you Y-Heads.
This message brought to you by the letter C.
Zack: I'm pretty sure our soul is composed of a series of toy commercials that ran from 1984-1988. When we die Hasbro does with us what they please.

I'd rank it second best for this week, but only because District X was so damn great. And maybe Y would have edged it out if I didn't like the art in District X way better.

But still, every revelation and every death this issue had me squealing with delight.

Y really is a great series. Love the dialogue and the characters just keep getting more and more interesting. Month in and month out it's a battle between this book and Fables for the best book coming out right now. And what with
Hero making her return at the end of last issue
things are going to get a whole lot more intense! :D

Also, if any of you are liking what the incredibly talented Brian K. Vaughan is doing on this series you should definitely check out his other work on books like the current arc of Ulimate X-Men or the best new series of last year Runaways and everyone should pick up a copy of his new series with art by Tony Harris called Ex Machina. Issue #1 comes out this Wednesday, June 16th and is about the worlds first superhero who hangs up his spandex because he feels all he is doing is defending the status quo and he wants to make a difference. So he runs for mayor of New York and wins. The series is being billed as the West Wing meets Unbreakable and the creative team behind could hardly be better. Here are the preview pages:

Vaughan's best work ?... Still Y the Last man !!

SPOILERS

Arrgh ! Yorick is dying. I'm sure he won't bite the dust, but it's good to have an explanation after all these issues.
Did you notice he was holding the ring when the plague striked in the first issue ? Great job, Vaughan !

Hello? Is there anybody out there?

Anyone still reading this book? I still am...

One question: who is the cowardly lion??? Or am I dumb and just missed this...

Another question: what did you think of the explanation for Yorick's immunity??? My opinion: it's not the real reason - it just doesn't seem plausible, but who knows...

I still read it, but, like everything else i read, only in trades....

Yorick's immunity, i dunno. there must be more to it. I'm thinking that possibly Yorick himself posesses the immunity without Ampersand, somethign to do with the engagement ring.

As far as I know, issue 60 was always going to be the last one.....right? I remember hearing somewhere that BKV planned to make an end to Y and around issue 60 would be the last one....so it would be one complete story..

I think it's a great idea, because, as completelyamazing as the book is how long can you keep stories fresh and going? Go out with a bang, and end a phenominal series before it has a chance to sour.

Doesn't mean I won't miss it :bawl

I read the first trade in the bookstore, and I went back to buy it with a gift certificate just a couple days ago - but all they had was one copy of volume five. So I ended up just reading that and then buying something else.

But, I'll have to order them through Amazon or something, because I'm really liking Vaughan's work (on this and what he did with Runaways).

And if they began this project with an end in mind then I'm definitely going to buy it! I can't stand when artists let things go on too long just to make money.

Cowboy Bebop is one of the best examples of a show (IMHO) where the artists knew when to quit (even after their movie was a commercial success). And their story arcs were so tight and balanced - every aspect of it was a work of art.

And, yeah, CB went out with a bang.

yeah.... in agreement, an end is a good thing. Y isn't like mainstream books where they can swap in new characters to spice things up, or whatever. It needs an ending. I loved Sandman, but it had an ending, and it was a GOOD ending, and i would rather have a good ending than have it drag on and become mediocre.

I mean, seriously, how much time can you expect to devote to the premise of 'the last man on earth' anyway? it's interesting, now, sure. But I don't want it to get stale.

also, I highly doubt it was 'canceled' in the strictest meaning of the word... it (along with Fables) was Vertigo's flagship book, they wouldn't cancel it, that would be idiotic on DC's part. I don't have to read any news story to know this was Vaughan's decision.

*edited to add: you know, this really isn't surprising in the fact that every one of Vertigo's creator owned titles (discounting the kinda quirky semi-ongoing series based on obscure DC characters) has been created with the intention that it would end sometime down the road, could be as little as 6 issues, or as many as, i think aside from Hellblazer (which is well past issue 100 and is still going. though it could be considered one of the ongoing based on an obscure character comics...) the highest was Sandman with 75 issues. (though 100 Bullets is closing in, it's on issue 70, and i believe it is planned to end with issue 100) most seem to end around the 60 mark.

for example:

Sandman: ended with 75
Preacher: 66
Transmetropolitan: 60
Invisibles: a bit hard to figure since it has a few 'volumes' but it was around 60 total. interesting to note, the final volume was numbered backwards, (#12 came out first, and #1 came out last) it was a count down to the final issue from the very beginning.

You have to remember these are not company owned, these are CREATOR owned. these will never be handed to another writer to continue the story, that's just the way it is. these creators had a story to tell, they told it. (Sandman being a bit of an exception here, with some spinoffs) it takes an incredible act of devotion and commitment to stick with something for 60 issues or more. that's about 6 years of their life. especially for the artist who can rarely work on anything else while the series is going on, (unless you're a machine like Darick who managed to do a few other things while still working on Transmet for 60 issues ;) ) though a writer can do 2-5 series a month, depending on how fast they are.

I'm guessing Fables is approaching it's end too. it's addressed several of the plot points the series was based on, now we just have to tie up the (keeping in mind i onloy read trades so am missing recent developments) Bigby/Snow plot, the Pinocchio plot, and see what the Fables are doing in places other than NY, and see if they ever return to the homelands... (a large plot was jsut finding out who the Adversary WAS, and we know that now, and his motivation. I'm taking that as a sign that we're moving into the home stretch. and, uh oh: http://www.dccomics.com/comics/?cm=5369 sounds fabulous, but what's left after that? though Jack's back! yay! and with Y, when we saw Beth, when we discovered why Yorick survived, and saw the amulet destroyed.... that answered MANY of the series foundational plots, so it had to be coming to an end....

I just read the first trade of this series (along with Transmet, because Nacht wore me down LOL) the other night and OMG! I'm absolutely hooked! Awesome, awesome story! Made me laugh and gave me the sniffles.... always a good sign. I'm gonna pick up the second trade tomorrow -- we're hitting a book show.

Just picked up the 7th trade...

And...I'm not even a quarter into it...and GOD DAMN. Like...every six months my love affair with this book is rekindled. I'll be posting more later when I finish, but for now:
