The movie recently came out on DVD and VHS, but I haven't heard much about it especially around here. What do you guys think of it, both as a movie and compared to the comic?

The movie is not that bad, really. Quite entertaining.
BUT the comic-book is, simply put, excellent. If you have to choose between the movie and the comic-book, there is no competition.

In my opinion LXG is the most innovative English languaged comic book that has come out in a long time, in fact since Neil Gaiman made his first appearance in the comic book world.
The concept of brining characters from late 19. century popular fiction together as a group of "super heros" to face 19. century "super villains" is great.
Super hero comic books are in many ways the very essense of popular fiction today. But the whole concept of popular fiction emerges in the late 19. century, as common people become literate, and printing becomes a lot cheaper.
It is, IMHO, a really intelligent aproach to the whole concept of popular fiction to mix the 19. century character into "super hero" plots.
