Untold Stories from Iraq and Afghanistan

I'd been posting enough about this in the Astounding Coffee thread to make me wonder if perhaps this needs its own thread.

Untold Stories from Iraq and Afghanistan is an anthology of real stories from troops on both war fronts made into a graphic novel with the help of talent such as Larry Hama, Michael Bair, Joshua LaBello, Mark Saxton, Tom Beland, Peter Palmiotti, Tom Orzechowski, and far too many others for me to name off the top of my head.

(Oh, and yours truly has scripted two stories for the book. I can't forget to mention that!)

Anyway, this book is a benefit for the USO, Fisher House, and the Wounded Warriors Project, and we're all volunteering our time and work to put this together.

We have a preview video!

Also, a few people behind the project will be at Virginia Comic Con November 20-21 in Richmond. Sadly, it doesn't look as if I'll be able to be there, but at least I added my signature to an autographed poster that will be raffled off there, so at least my name will make an appearance. ;)

And just so you know, I confirmed that I'm not the only 'Scrawler whose work will be included in this particular volume. Our own PirateKurt also drew a story that will be included. :D

Well, the book's been available a while, and because of the extreme busy-ness of my life, I haven't been able to post much about it. I might not be able to for a little while longer, as we've got a slew of events coming up.

I myself have done two signings and have no less than three the first week in April in Utah and Idaho. In May, I'll be in Missoula, Montana. Late June, upstate New York.

Some of the other creators are also experiencing similar craziness with upcoming convention appearances in Chicago, North Carolina (yes, at one of my bucket list conventions, Heroes Con), and Virginia.

And more news on upcoming convention appearances.

I will be at Fandemonium this weekend signing books and giving out other fun stuff. I won't be at SpoCon. However, you can expect to see quite a few of the creators behind the book at Chicago Comic Con, so that'll make for a pretty busy August alone. And then I'll look forward to New York in November.

Volume two of Untold Stories from Iraq and Afghanistan should be out soon, but due to it being a bit more ambitious (like bigger and in color!) than the first volume, we're going to need a little help raising the funds for printing.

Sounds like a job for a Kickstarter project!

This little bit of astounding coffee wasn't originally going to be about the book. I had been planning on getting back into mountaineering ever since my snowboarding mishap temporarily took me off any mountains. This summer I am pleased to say that not only will I scale Idaho's highest peak with my family and hopefully some friends from my short-lived stint as an Army recruit, but it's going to be a benefit climb for our veterans! More on that later....

And it's later enough. We only just started taking pledges for "Climb for the Heroes," and already I've got four pledges and a business sponsorship.

One strange thing about writing for "Untold Stories..." is that, while I correspond fairly extensively with a number of the veterans who've contributed their stories, meeting them in person just hadn't happened... until now.

The soldier who's account ended up being one of my favorite stories in the first volume of Untold Stories.., took a road trip with his family and arrived in my neck of the woods today. Our families got together for dinner and conversation. He didn't have his copy of the book with him, sadly, but decided instead to have me autograph his "Afghanistan Coalition Forces" ball cap. To tell the truth, though, I think I should be getting his autograph, because he'd impacted my life a lot more than the other way around....

Don't let the fact that I haven't posted on this in a while give you the impression that not much has been happening. I'd been quite busy working on some other Heroes Fallen Studios projects, but also lining up more signings for "Untold Stories from Iraq and Afghanistan." So far, I've had signings in Utah, Montana, Illinois, Florida, and all over Idaho. My daughter has a four day weekend coming up, I had an urge to hike the Badlands, and so we're going to South Dakota next.
