The 'Eat my shorts' piece was posted earlier on this thread. My Avatar came from that poster rough, which I pitched at Marvel and was rejected. No snarling, leaping or attacking anybody. I couldn't see the third one, I got a flag saying 'the specific server could not be found'.
But I imagine it was the Marvel Age cover, where Kurt's mimiking the old Conan cover complete with broadsword and babe.

And here's a piece I did as a cover for the Wonderfest Model & Toy Convention probram book, four or five years ago. Check out what the alien modeler is working on--a little wish fullfillment?

Oh that is so cool!

By the Way Dave, you don't mind if I print these out and stick them on my school folders do you? I figure I should ask, even though I've already started doing it.

I also like that I can say "I kinda almost know him!" :D

i'm not getting the piccie..... :(
Oo! teeny question Dave, can't help but notice the occasional Elfquest reference with some of your stuff :)

In Kitty's Fairy Tale and the Nightcrawler limited series there were two scenes that puzzled me...

Kitty's fairy tale.....
"Bigthings!"
"Hush Pini! they'll hear you - they left the girl... great!"

(and this from memory, oy.....)
The penny drops! Wendy and Richard *Pini* co-creators of "elfquest" right? a tip of the hat eh? :D

Nightcrawler limited series...
Kurt: "I cant teleport anywhere i havent seen"
Bamf: "That's fine, our houses don't have doors!"

:? eh? :?

I'm puzzled about why you're puzzled. Maybe we should puzzle out this puzzle together. Puzzled? :?

Meanwhile, I'm trying out an experiment here. This is taken from a xerox of a penciled page. This was a Solar story I did for Valiant. It was never published. I'm hoping the pencil lines are dark enough to be seen--

Here's another page from that unpublished Solar. This guy is a guest star; I forget his name, but he was the star of his own book, The Eternal Warrior.

OMIGOD! I love the Comet's costume. When did you do this Dave?

Did this Comet have anything to do with Archie's Comet? DC leased the rights from Archie back in the early 90's.

Anyway, this character rules! Do I have to start another campaign at the DC Boards to get this in print too?

BTW, that piece with the X-Men faces is my computer's wallpaper right now.

Thanks for sharing these beautiful pieces of art! :D

Well, after a quick look on the web (isn't the internet great :naughty:!), I've found the answers myself.

http://www.mightymlj.com/interviews/cockrum.html

Everything except for the timing. Did DC decide to try using Archie's heroes after the IMPACT fiasco?

Yeah, DC intended to use at least the Comet after the Impact line ended. That interview suggested that Steel Stirling might've been slated to be a backup feature, but I didn't know anything about that.

Something that's noit evident from the pages I showed you--Comet's costume was light with black markings when he was using his powers, but was black with light markings when he wasn't.

*blinks...and...gapes...and...BWEEEEES!* Dave...about your Gargoyle Kurt pic thing...one word: YUMMY! *squeals really loud and high pitched...and...then...blinks...and...blushes...and tries to hide...* ok...admitting you think a comic book character is a total hotty to his creator is almost as embarassing as telling a REAL guy he's hot...*blushes more...blinks...smiles sheepishly again...* but...IT'S TRUE!!! EEEEEH! That one is one of my fav pics of the elf! HEHEHE! XD Man...if I could only draw him that good...*cough.* My fan art all sucks, though, compared to the real artist's stuff...'specially yours. heh. Always said, any other interpritation of him wasn't really him, 'cause you were the creator and that like made you the "fuzzy elf GOD." or something. heh. Even my...*cough.* alternate dimensional versions are just cheap imitations...heh...v.v...Your art is really really cool! Man...I love how you still do the style that I remember seeing in the older comics! Don't get me wrong, I like the new ones and all, but...it just doesn't compare to the earlier stuff, you know? like the 80's and before. heh. That's one of the reasons I'm trying to collect the whole Excalibur series...>_> it's the older stuff. heh. *blinks...eyes the time. SQUEAKS!* oh, CRAP! I did it again! I only got an hour and a half to sleep until I gotta go to work! @.@ *cries.* heh...I guess I'd better go now, huh...? heh...laters...great stuff...could we see more Kurt stuff...? hee...pwease...? *puppy dog-bambi eyes, which really look really goofy on her anyway.*
 Lady Bamf: Whoop- -WOW! What's HE?!
:ooh: Kurt: ~uh-oh...~
 Lady Bamf 2: HUBBA-HUBBA!

WOWZERS! the pic of Sarek is so detailed, VERY nice work Dave.
*Panz goes back to drool at the pics some more*

No matter how hard I try, I have never been able to draw. I achieved a kind of technical success with classic figure drawing, but it still lacks movement and spark...I am SO jealous! I always have a jillion pictures running around in my head and no way to draw them! I keep hoping that some genius will develop an imagination camera, so that I can take pictures from my brain, but ya know, even if the did come up with such a thing, I prolly couldn't afford it. :P

Hey, Panz, if motion is your problem, there are a lot of reference books available on the human figure in motion. Probably the most comprehensive is Eadward Muybridge's The Human Figure in Motion. It's old--written somewhere in the early 1900s, if memory serves--but continuously in print.

Muybridge set up multiple time lapse cameras and photographed sequences of people doing various actions. A lof of them are very mundane, like 'woman carrying bucket' for example, but the book can be very useful. When I was just getting started as a pro I found that I couldn't use poses straight from the book, they lacked that zzzzziiinnnggg! that comics want, and so I'd have to extend motions beyond what the subject in the photo was doing, but it was still a great starting point.

Muybridge also did one on animals in motion.

There are others, some of them a lot less expensive, but if you want to learn to put motion in your drawings, there's a place to start.

Luck--;)

Whoa...nice.

Big question, Dave; I was wondering how much you and other comic artists rely on reference. I'm guessing you can do most poses and anatomy right out of your head, with occasional sidelong glances in the mirror...ok, maybe in the martial arts mag or the bodybuilding book... :whistle

(I can draw certain animals with my eyes shut, but I still need massive reference for humans....ack!)

After thirty-odd years in the business, I can draw nearly everything I need to from my head. But I still have a massive reference library, and I refer to it when I need to.

When I was still a fan, and trying to find ways of breaking in, the former DC inker Sid Greene wrote me a long letter on how I could prepare myself for a career in comics.. One of the most useful suggestions he made was 'start a clip file. Sooner or later you're going to have to draw everything from a dinosaur to a Tibetan trolley car'. And he was right. I've been buying reference books and also clipping magazines and newspapers for reference materials, for longer than I've been a pro.
