The First X-Men

So Marvel has started teasers for a new series called "The First X-Men".
While most people are assuming that it's a continuation of "X-Men First Class", I wouldn't be so quick to jump to that same conclusion. In fact, I would go so far as to say we may be looking at a Wolverine title involving other "immortal" characters who have been around a lot longer.
Recent events that have me wondering about this:
-Iron Fist's role (both currently and now, apparently, historically) in the Phoenix Force's visitation to Earth. Stretching back ages.
-The AvX event where the X-Men's core values are being brought into question.
-Xavier's sudden absence in the comics.
-Time Traveling Sabertooth (see Astonishing Wolverine & Spider-Man by Zeb Wells)
-Angel can't remember ANYTHING. He's basically NOT Warren at this point.
-It's about that time when people start getting retcons or new origins, and Xavier is due. Been saying that for a few months now.
