Winter 2016: Hisako

Post by Chaos »

Guilty.

That had been the verdict. Or it would have been, if it was a trial. Truthfully - objectively - this would have been justice -- convicted of the crime of killing others, Ichiki Hisako would have ended up with a prison life sentence. Murder in the first degree. No, she hadn't been on trial. All the same her sentence would be carried out.

She wasn't headed to a 'prison'. Not literally. Same as she'd never been on trial - or even arrested - for her crimes -- which were crimes. Tutting to herself as her only remaining eye wandered lazily out of the aeroplane window and into the thick grey clouds over Kyoto, the jet-haired Japanese girl reminded herself of the grim truth that was her reality; that the universe worked in mysterious, often unfair, ways. And karma had a nasty habit of sneaking up and tearing your life apart.

Her reality, she thought, had a wonderful sense of humour.

Her destiny, it seemed, would not be so straightforward. Stabbed in the back by a boy she swore she loved -stabbed in the eye and blinded by the men sent by the boy she loved - here she was. Rapidly approaching Kyoto from above, returning to her home as she'd prayed to months and months prior out of homesickness. Rather ironically, now feeling further from 'home' than she'd ever done in her life. Xavier's was dead. But there were other schools for Japanese mutants. 'Prison schools', her old classmates had called them.

The perfect place for bad little mutants to reflect on their crimes. In her case, they'd say 'Assault', 'Murder one' and, naturally, 'birth'.

How dare she, after all. How dare she eat, sleep, even breathe. How dare she exist. How dare she take those lives to save her own. She didn't feel the tears falling down her cheek. Her heart felt so heavy it was like an anchor, pulling her down to the earth, steadily guiding the plane towards the ground. The gravity absolute and unforgiving. And in another few moments that passed like a grey blur, swallowing up what little amber yellow was left in the clouds, she was home. Kyoto, Japan, at roughly 14:30pm. Ready to carry out her sentence.

"Stand straight", she commanded. And so they did. Every one. And this pleased Ishida Megumi.

Her cold grey eyes fell across the rows of black and white clad students, each one's neck tied with a red ribbon. The only colour she would allow. The only colour they would bring given their nature. Her heels clacked against the stone paved school grounds like stiletto knives against armor, piercing the silence like a death blow to the past remaining shreds of dignity her students had left. Dressed in uniforms that drowned out their individuality. They belonged to her school now, and in effect, her.

Smirking with enough ice to send a second chill down everyone's spine, her lips the same bloody shade of sanguine, she thought back to the comments she'd received from her own peers in the past: they said some people had sticks up their behinds, but it was agreed that Ishida Megumi was the one who placed the stick up people, and she puppeted them with that stick agonisingly. When Ishida-sensei said jump, you jumped. You apologised for not jumping high enough, and then you were punished until that height was the only height you could jump. Every time you saw her you did jump. Her name haunted your sleep, and before her, your will froze, and under her heel you shattered like glass.

Ishida-sensei was a sadist of the highest caliber, and her control was absolute. No question.

And if that didn't convince her students, the station of on- -site, armed security who were fiercely dedicated to maintaining her brand of 'order' made short work of doing so.

An hour in the Discipline Room was enough to make sure one never, ever forgot.

"Students;", Ishida announced finally, having paced from one side of the wide, monochrome grounds to the other, then back half way to stand before her ranks of new students, "My name is Ishida Megumi: you will address me as 'Sensei' for the duration of your stay here.", she paused to soak up their faltering expressions, like desperate, weak insects clinging to whatever warmth the winter s ow had left, fooling themselves into believing that it was anything but futile to believe in survival. What they knew was dead.

"Welcome to Sakuya Institute.", she said finally, in a voice so firm, and flat, and final that it didn't prompt a response. The students just stood there at attention. Hisako just stood there at attention. The seconds seemed to drag out forever before the stern, sable-haired woman spoke again, her words cutting and icy as a glacial wind, as she went on with her speech, telling them where they would eat, sleep and work while there, informing the students - with what Hisako could barely make out seemed to be enjoyment behind her frigid facade - that they were here to 'better themselves'. It was a sick parody of her former school, even in appearance: jet black walls, flat and lifeless, jutting upwards in neat, solid, flat-topped buildings. A cluster of cubes and oblongs; everything seemed to be perfectly shaped and fit together. It was a polygon fortress that felt suffocating to be within, even it's windows seemed black as night, and the skies themselves seemed to twist and lurch at the sickly sight of the synthetic structure, nothing natural within save for a single Sakura tree in the very centre of the grounds, its soil circle the only soft shape in sight, reaching out of the cold earth like a pale hand kissed with pink blossoms, desperately seeking what little light it could in the frigid confines of this boundless cage.

The students were dismissed one row at a time. Hisako learned that each line was another class but she hadn't even noted their faces, so much colour seemed drained from them, the world around them, that she hadn't even noticed their individuality. One girl had unusually bright blonde hair, almost white, with smoke grey eyes. She'd noticed the girl only because she'd been stopped by the security and pulled aside, inspected with a gloved hand gripping her chin before being shoved back into line, a second guard from behind her removing a thin, golden chain from her neck and confiscating it. Hisako stepped forward to protest before she, too, was dragged aside. Back pressed against the wall she fought back with pushes and shoves, held down by others as one of the guards asked her "What is that on your face? Are you a Pirate or something?"

She snorted back, grinning at his stout face, a filter mask over his mouth and nose obscuring most of his identity, hair shaved off removing what little was left. Even his eyes seemed somehow empty, fuelled with a fury not his own, somehow dead. Armoured head to toe in riot gear - padded black uniform, Kevlar body vest and armed with some sidearm pistol and a canister of something she was sure wasn't smart to inhale - he asked her the same question again, sounding more frustrated that she'd just smiled at him for a moment or two: "Yes.", she answered finally, "I am a Pirate."

That had pushed him too far. Raising his hand he slapped her hard across a pale cheek. Something about the cold made it sting thrice as badly. He grasped her by the back of the neck and pulled the eyepatch up, revealing the thin scar there, and the lack of any evidence she'd even once had an eye there. Begrudgingly, he placed the eyepatch back over the scar, shoving her back into the line without a word, into the centre of her future classmate's stares of intrigue, horror and surprise. She felt naked before them, face burning red for two reasons. Without another word, breathing as softly as she could so as not to draw any more attention, she mindlessly followed the orders of the security to her dorm room.

As bad as she felt, however, Hisako also felt strangely thankful. At the very least, Ishida Megumi hadn't seen that. And for some reason she wasn't clear about, that felt like a huge blessing.
