Cessily Kincaid

Post by Starfish » Tue May 15, 2007 10:49 pm

Name: Cessily Kincaid

Alias: Mercury

Other names: Cess

Date of Birth: 10/10/1990

Place of Birth: Ellsworth, Maine

Height: 5’7" (variable)

Hair Colour: Red, long and straight

Eye Colour: Silver, no visible pupils

Skin: Silver metal

Nationality: American

Abilities: Entire body is composed of a metallic substance with an appearance similar to mercury, though non-toxic. As a result, she is no longer an organic carbon-based life form and lacks an ordinary metabolism. She can alter between liquid and solid states and reshape her form at will, though she is still very inexperienced with it and often lacks control. Molecular adhesion power gives her the ability to cling to solid surfaces and move her body at will even without overt locomotive features.

Skills: During her upbringing she was taught to play various musical instruments and received some formal dance training. Played on her school’s girl’s basketball team.

Known Relatives:
Marcus Kincaid (father), Jennifer Kincaid (mother)
David, Linda and Steven Kincaid (siblings)
Peter Kincaid (grandfather), Mary Kincaid (grandmother)
Large number of assorted aunts, uncles, cousins etc.

History:
Born in Hancock County, Maine, Cessily grew up as the youngest of four children in her parents’ home, located in a picturesque small town close to the coastline. There she spent a mostly normal and sheltered childhood. With the entire Kincaid clan being considered a fairly prosperous and reputable family, a certain image-consciousness was also innate to Cessily’s parents. Therefore their children’s upbringing was always aimed at making presentable and respectable young people out of them.

This particularly applied to Cessily’s older siblings, who usually received the most attention from their parents and other relatives. With her being the youngest among them, Cessily generally remained a bit in the background, but was also allowed more leeway than her brothers and sister for the same reason. Always having had a mind of her own, she welcomed this liberty and would often venture out to explore the world in her own way, usually to the chagrin of her siblings.

As she grew into a teenager, Cessily would continue to look for ways to meet the expectations others had for her as best as she could while at the same time maintaining her own independence and her freewheeling attitude, though never to the point of growing rebellious. Over time it became apparent that she would not turn out the same way as her older siblings, but her parents seemingly accepted that circumstance. However, most of Cessily’s other relatives regarded her as the somewhat wayward child of the family, despite her having been well liked by friends and townsfolk and having made her best effort to please everyone.

When she was sixteen years old, Cessily’s mutation manifested itself. While being alone in the girl’s locker room at her school, her body suddenly transformed into a metallic, mercury-like substance, causing in her to lose human shape and collapse into a convoluted mass. The incident caused considerable agitation, particularly since it was not possible to tell her identity at first, so Cessily was declared missing until she was able to communicate again. Afterwards she was put under quarantine and examined for several days to make sure that she posed no threat before being allowed to return home to her family.

Aside from the traumatic change itself, Cessily had to deal with the social repercussions that were caused by her new condition. Only very few of her friends and acquaintances would treat her in the same manner as before the change, and most would become uncomfortable or fearful in her presence, even shunning her entirely. Continuous avoidance by more and more of her former friends led to Cessily becoming increasingly isolated in her very own hometown. Though she initially still sought the company of others, she began to withdraw herself out of fear of being rejected.

Though her parents attempted everything they could think of to have her cured, it soon became apparent that her condition was irreversible. Many specialists expressed the interest to further examine their daughter, but Cessily’s parents dreaded the increasing attention that would have caused. They tried to confine her to their home most of the time and kept her out of the public’s sight. Under the pressure of the community and their relatives, Cessily’s parents and siblings began to reject her as well and she had to realise that they would not be able to deal with the situation.

When Cessily turned to her grandparents for assistance, they immediately offered to take her in and provide her with a place to stay for as long as she wanted, being appalled by the way the rest of her family conducted themselves. Her parents did not object, seemingly being relieved by her departure. She currently resides at her grandparents’ rural home.

General description:
Cessily usually appears like a normal teenaged girl, with the exception of being visibly made out of metal. She assumes her basic human form to subconsciously match her former appearance, but her current degree of control over her shape shifting ability only allows her to mold herself into rather basic shapes. She likes to dress in mostly casual wear, never having appreciated the overly classy style her siblings preferred, and is not too concerned about fashion trends. Nonetheless she is conscious about the way she looks and tries to come off as appealing as possible despite her unusual physique.
She has not yet realised the scope of her change and still acts in the same way as she did before her change, including doing things like ingesting food and drink, in order to feel more human and make others more comfortable around her.

Personality:
Cessily is sensitive and kind, usually well-mannered, with a sincere concern for the feelings or needs of others. Due to recent events she has become somewhat reserved and observing, but will generally open up quickly to new people who approach her kindly. She has a need for harmony and usually tries to avoid conflict when it’s possible, but is staunchly loyal to her friends and faithful to her own value system, with a tendency of becoming extremely defensive should either be threatened in any way. Being individualistic and open-minded, she places great value on her own independence and has no desire to control others.

Well, as far as I know her creators never made a secret out of the fact that she has been modelled after the T-1000. :smirk

Ok, added a few more details, but I guess I'll leave it at that now. Anything else can be put on her myspace later (once I get it to work :P), or it will come into play during the game.

Mercury explained

Post by Starfish » Tue May 29, 2007 11:26 pm

Alright, since the nature of Cessily's condition tends to raise a few questions now and then, I decided to become a bit geeky and put a better explanation together. This is basically some theorizing on my part, based on what we know and expanded with similar ideas from other media. This mostly uses typical science-fiction pseudo-science, but I tried to make it as plausible as possible and go a bit beyond the “magical mercury” explanation we got so far.

And to loosen it up a bit, the charming Dr. Harkins gives us some comments from his report dealing with Mercury’s examination, performed while she was quarantined after her change.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although classified as a mutant, Cessily Kincaid is in a special situation because her body transformed to a wholly inorganic state. As a result, she no longer possesses most characteristics attributed to living beings, but instead uses the adaptive ability of her unique physique to mimic these characteristics, in many cases subconsciously.

“The subject’s condition is with little doubt the result of a genetic mutation, the term mutant would be misleading in this case. Lacking any kind of organic matter or metabolism, the subject would not even qualify as a human being. In fact, unless applying some kind of outlandish definition, one couldn’t even call her a form of life. I’m pretty sure that some of my colleagues would find the term Synthetic Life to be more fitting.”

Mercury’s body is entirely composed of a metallic substance. Its mimetic capabilities allow it to alter its shape, texture and colour swiftly, but most of these changes are still beyond her control. She instinctively takes a form that resembles her appearance as a human most of the time, though her natural shape would arguably be that of a featureless mercury-like mass.

“At this time the molecular makeup of this substance is impossible to comprehend. Despite showing different characteristics across the subject’s body, it is in fact just a single type of molecule, albeit in alternate states. In its basic state it takes an appearance similar to the element mercury, but closer examinations revealed it to be a kind of very complex poly-alloy with unique properties.”

The poly-alloy molecules of her body are highly adaptive, not only being able to change the features of her body on the macro-level, but also on the micro-level, altering their own properties to suit their intended role. Most of these changes are caused by subconscious or instinctual reactions, since Mercury still lacks comprehension and control in regard of her powers.

“Even more fascinating than the subject’s physical composition are the properties of these poly-alloy molecules. They seem to be capable of altering trivial characteristics like colour and texture, but are also able to imitate complex systems like senses. We can only speculate how far-reaching this adaptability could possibly be and further examination is mandatory. All in all, I daresay that the subject appears to be the very embodiment of the hypothetical concept called nanomorph."

Mercury is able to replicate the function of all human senses by adapting some of her matter to act as suitable receptors. Out of habit, she usually chooses to closely imitate the human sensory apparatus, but will forgo this whenever necessary, especially while in a non-humanoid shape.

„Interestingly, the subject seems to limit itself to a conservative behaviour regarding her sensory perception for most of the time. However, there is no apparent reason for why she should not be able to expand this functionality to a larger part of her body or increase her scope of perception beyond that of biological systems.”

Mercury’s cognitive functions operate in a somewhat similar way as the rest of her abilities, but are distributed over her entire body. The flexible nature of her molecules allows them to perform computation and storage of information on an atomic level, while being networked with each other through electrical signals, in that regard resembling the hypothetical material computronium.

“It is most astounding that the subject still retains all memories from her previous life and also exhibits a more or less similar behaviour as before, including the display of complex human emotions. It will be interesting to examine what long term effects the lack of a normal neural network and neurochemistry will have. Beside that, the capabilities and limits of the molecular-scale computation will have to be explored in depth.”

Her body will not tire from physical activity and does not rely on an external source of energy to retain its function, although Mercury still consumes food and drink out of habit. Her mind does require a certain amount of sleep, though, and she will enter a sleep-like resting period for about one to three hours per day, during which she usually experiences vivid dreams.

“One of the most extraordinary aspects of the subject is the apparent independence of any comprehendible source of energy. The frequent and swift change from liquid to solid states alone requires a tremendous transfer of energy. We have no idea where this energy is drawn from and how it is harnessed. This clearly violates our common laws of physics, an observation that has been made with other mutants as well.”

Should parts of Mercury’s matter become separated from each other, they will retain an immaterial link and usually attempt to rejoin into a single mass. It is not known whether she can separate at will or how much control she could possibly exert over those parts.

“During our examinations we decided to take a sample of the subject’s matter for further scans. Because of the substance’s unusually high resistance against external manipulation, extreme force was necessary to accomplish this. To our surprise, the removed mass retained its activity and appeared to still be connected to the main body in some kind. It seems as if single molecules of this astounding matter attempt to seek out others to form a complex matrix again.”

In the unlikely event of permanently lost mass, Mercury’s body will eventually use foreign matter (preferably metallic) and reconstruct it on an atomic level to replicate its own poly-alloy. The same will happen if a removed part cannot reunite with the rest. In that case, the link with the lost part can be severed afterwards, causing it to decompose into a fine metallic dust.

“After prohibiting the removed part to rejoin with the main body for an extended time, we noticed same damage to the flooring of the subject’s quarantine area. Apparently, the main mass has instinctively reconstructed a part of its surrounding to compensate for the lost part. It has yet to be seen to what degree the poly-alloy can alter foreign matter it comes into contact with.”

Miscellaneous:
  • Her body heat is variable, varying with activity and energy usage. It is usually close to the surrounding temperature, but she can influence it to a certain degree.
  • Because the transformation into a metallic substance has increased her mass, her strength level increased accordingly, so that she would still be able to move.
  • Similar to the element mercury, her poly-alloy is a conductor for electricity but is not ferromagnetic. Additionally, she has no body scent of her own (though she usually wears some perfume).
  • Because of the highly alien structure of her cognitive functions, she appears as an inanimate object to mutants with telepathic, emphatic or related mind powers.
  • Because she still has difficulties replicating vocal cords, her voice may sound slightly distorted and artificial.
  • Electrical shocks can cause her to lose control over her body and may render her disoriented. Powerful enough shocks can cause unconsciousness or perhaps even memory loss.
