Katrina Disaster in New Orleans

Okay, everyone: I've finally been called up by the Red Cross. My flight leaves at 6am tomorrow. (Oh GOD, that means I have to be in Oakland International Airport at 4:30am at the latest! :X) Long and short of it, I'm going to be gone until late October 28th. See everyone sometime around Halloween. :...

Wow... tomb of Odysseus found

:LOL I love it! A major find of the century, ranking up there with the discovery of Troy itself, and political and economic squabbles have kept it under wraps! God, this is just too plausible. It *could* be a hoax, I guess, but if so, it's masterfully told. I'll have to look around for some outside ...

Schiavo autopsy finally released... (the new religion thread?)

It's logical... but not "legal". ;) Essentially, the pre-existing law defines a carpool as more than one PERSON in a vehicle. Pets don't count, as they're not legally defined as people (despite animal rights activists everywhere). But if you've got a baby who can sit in the same seat as yo...

Schiavo autopsy finally released... (the new religion thread?)

I think one of my problems with Intelligent Design theory isn't so much the idea of a creator behind it all as it is... 1) What group is bringing this up. 2) The political, religious, and social history of this group. 3) ... Which leads to precisely which God must be the one pulling the cosmic strin...

Hoodie: My apologies for not explaining about Snopes in better detail: I kind of take it for granted everyone around here knows about it. Snopes.com is a site run by a few dedicated professional journalists. The aim is to research, debunk, or (rarely) verify various urban legends and rumors g...

My welcome as well. :) As for me, I'm afraid it's going to take a while to get down there. : Red Cross has bumped into a serious problem: with the bankruptcy of two major airlines, and everyone else's travel plans to the disaster zone, they can't get flights for us to go out on. Maybe it's okay in o...

Harry Potter... (spoilerific)

I was also left wondering about D's portrait. Although we've never seen anyone actually ask for council from a picture, we have gotten pertinent information sometimes (i.e. the Fat Lady fingering Sirius as the guy who attacked her). While photographs capture a few seconds of time in a repeating imag...

Finally!! I FINALLY finished my copy of Half Blood Prince , and can now enjoy reading this thread and the (no longer) spoilers therein! I had read an oblique spoiler (in a up-and-coming news bit about the Goblet of Fire movie, of all things) about the end of Dumbledore in this book. Basically, the r...

MASSIVE X3 SPOILERS!!!

I agree that the Sentinels were always a bit too "fantastic". The AID inside of them, the ability to walk around without trouble, the weapons, their flight systems (HOW MUCH fuel should it be taking to lift off with that much mass??); all are just too much to believe. I have an easier time...

Fourpaws, I also congratulate you on your speedy trip, and Godsend. It's going to be hellacious there, but it's also going to be worth it. My last entry about not being called up for a long time was innacurate. Like so many organizations, the American Red Cross has been working so hard that communic...

Well, it's not quite classical.... I have a great fondness for 40s jazz, swing and otherwise. Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Satchmo.... The list goes on and on. I've gotten a taste for 50s bebop, but never liked "free" jazz of the 60s. (Sounds like people tun...

According to a friend I knew who lived there most of his life, the thing about New Orleans... hell, the thing about that entire state, is that it has no money. Except for those wealthy businessmen, there is no money there. Except for those wealthy businessmen, there never has been. That includes the...

Cartoons about Kurt as a kid

For Better or For Worse is a popular American comic strip that's been running since the 80s, maybe even the late 70s. What makes it so unique, as opposed to other "kid comics" like Peanuts and Family Circus, is that everyone on it ages . When things began, Pattersons had just moved into th...

Nacht, you're probably gonna think I'm nuts too  ... but today I'm going to try and see if I can get my boss to clear me to use a few weeks of sick leave I've saved up to join up with the American Red Cross and go there myself. The local Red Cross chapter is giving a 3 day crash course in resc...

If they get rid of Xavier, I really doubt there will *be* a fourth movie. If there is, it won't resemble anything like the first two, which really focused on the school and its students as much as the X-men themselves. It will have to go in a completely different direction. As for NC getting "o...

Sometimes the strangest talents can be profitable....

Has anyone else here ever had a "fun" talent pay off in an unexpected way? Generally it's the more mundane things that pay our way through life. There are the fortunate, talented ones like Bamfette (whose fine art skill is such that she can make a living at what others would consider just ...

Cartoons about Kurt as a kid

I think the "rubbing the back of the neck thingy" is more cultural than anything else. In many of the live action Japanese films I've seen, someone does that at some point (though often for comedic effect). Sort of like how they'll wave at you (arm upright, wrist wagging) to say "come...

The Winding Way (Nightcrawler #7-11) SPOILERS on last 2 pages!

What I'm remembering is several documentaries on Physical Freak Shows of the past, and how since the 60s they've plunged in popularity due to public pressure. Yeah, people will pay a couple bucks to see a cow with a fifth leg, but staring at a human with a conjoined twin is a cultural faux-pas. (Whi...

Well, I suppose it's better than putting in two super whores for added spice. I might... mind you, MIGHT... go to see it for Mr. Grammar; he's an excellent actor, and IMHO the one thing they did right was casting him as as Beast. Jean's death was foretold, inevitable, and core to the story: I have n...

This is an official "rumor" disclaimer on this post, and it won't be pretty.... This may be just a rumor. I pray it is. But.... According to what I've heard, Kurt is the one scheduled to become "teamless" after the House of M is over. Apparently, this is the big reason why Davis...

Where're you from?

Female from California, USA, in the mythical Bay Area. While practically no one outside of the Bay Area has heard of San Leandro, it helps to see it as about 10 miles south of Oakland, and across the bay (about 20 miles) from San Fransicso. (As an aside, I can't believe how relatively COLD it has be...

It didn't take me long to get used to this "lighter and brighter" look at all. I really like the colors, especially that marbelized blue for the buttons and Quick Reply bar. And having a random banner is quite eye catching. :)
